My $.02 to Cape Cod Online

Hi,
I live and fish in R.I.. The herring issue is the same here also. I don't mind not being able to get some river herring and going fishing but It's a double standard again. The rod and reelers have to give something up, do you think the trawlers will?
Commercial fisheries will still deplete the herring like the did in all the years before. I can't even use last years herring I still have in the freezer, I know I asked. With $3 a gallon gas and no herring I might as well store the fishing gear until 2008.
Another nail into the economic coffin.
I fish other ways but for keepers I use bait. Eels at $2 ea. no thanks.
The only reason I bought a freshwater fishing license was to take herring, how about a refund R.I.?

I found myself in that same situation. Not being able to use river herrings sucks but I think i'll be a better fisherman because I told myself last year not to be too dependent on them and this year i've invested in plugs and plastics and I plan on catching my own eels. To me it takes more skills to catch fish on lures than it does bait but thats just my opinion.

I went last night to a spot that I have been fishing this time of year for the last 4 years. For whatever reason, the big fish were not there however the water was boiling and packed with herring doing the horizontal bop. This spot always has herring but there were more than I have seen in the past three years by far. The stripers must have been full.

Hey, just to let you guys know I fish from the surf and only use artificials, the only reason I put the post up was to tease my father a bit because he uses herring for fishing like a crak addict needing a fix....
Anyhow, 2 of the 3 MA state record Stripers were caught on artificials, so that's gotta tell folks who use herring something worth while..... I hope.....
