Decent tagged fish this morning
Got this 40" 23#'er outta the local harbor this morning. She slurped up a whole herring and took me for quite a run. Had a yellow lttoral tag in her too. Looking forward to getting her history.

Why not? As long as it's of legal length, which it is.

Nice fish. As for the tag - I'm no biologist, but I would think that they would want you to keep a tagged fish. If that one died of old age the tag would be a waste. I keep very few fish - but I would probably kill a tagged fish in a heartbeat because then someone gets to learn something from that tag. Tag or no tag - nice fish - enjoy.

Kind of makes the fishing trip more interesting
I got a hat that says "striped bass conservation"
I keep tagged fish (interesting to get that "letter" that explains where, and when it was tagged)
can't understand why I'm "conserving" if I keep the tagged ones ?
I guess the scientists/biologists must keep some kind of statistics.

yes, there is a difference between ocean herring and the ones coming out of the rivers which you cannot take/catch/possess. But as long as the big mid-water trawlers are allowed to continue to deplete the ocean herring we will have herring as bait.
There are zillions of tiny pollock around the harbor this year. Have never had much luck live-lining them from shore but I betcha if someone tossed a few in the livewell and headed offshore a bit they would come up with large!
