refurbushing old 704 greenie
Hey guys,
I fouund an ols 704 greenie that looks like it's seen minor, if any use.
The reel won't turn (not too much grease inside), but the insides look great.
Also, it's missing it's drag knob.
Anybody got any ideas.
Also, fisherman's outfitters sell what look to be a 704 Z drag knob, could I use this one on the greenie?

Also,
If I take the arm that goes from the main gear to the shaft off at the screw at the base of the shaft and the grommet that attaches to the main grear, the reel has great movement.
Help.

Mike P knows those reels....let me know if you need parts down the road...if I can find them in this jungle 
I believe he said that Greenies and Black and Golds are interchangable ? Better wait for him or some other member with solid info. |

You should be able to pull the shaft out. If you can't, it is frozen. Turn it upside down, put some Liquid wrench around the shaft where it goes through the cylindrical pinion gear, wait over night, tap it a few times and yank it out, clean it and the inside of the gear with emery paper, and it should work fine. Best spinning reel ever made (once you convert it to manual pickup). |

Someone came into Mike CC's shop earlier in the week with the same problem. Mike said it was seized because of salt build-up underneath the main gear, at the handle stem. Clean that out too while it's apart. It could also have a bent main shaft.

many parts for the classic Penn reels are available on Ebay. You could pick up a "beater" reel to use for parts. Also, you can try your local flea market. I picked up a sweet Penn 712 greenie earlier this year for around 30.00 at the Taunton Flea . It works great. Try Bucko's , they've always been great for parts, even with really old stuff. Penn used to supply parts also, don't know if they still do but it might be worth a call.
