Customized BM Atom Jr.'s
Swear I heard a few cows turn around during their migration south after finishing these.  Pics don't really do them justice, they reflect light like disco balls.
put some bling on some Beachmaster Atom jr's.
Used Marine Epoxy mixed with the flakes. Very hard durable finish. Could drag it over the rocks w/o chipping. Will break bluefish teeth  . Recoat most of my wooden plugs that I buy with this method w/ or w/o flake added. Extends their life without changing the action. |

Ive used a couple different ones. Starbright has always worked well. Along with Devcon. Either one keeps my wooden plugs looking fresh for a long time. Won't cast most bought plugs until I've coated them.

Chief: Are you talking about an epoxy from a tube? You're mention of Devcon has me wondering. What kind of drying time is required here,
whether from a tube or a can?

Im talking about this stuff in particular.
Devcon 2 TON epoxy. Sets up in 30 minutes. Crystal Clear. You can handle it in 2 hours. completely waterproof & chemical resistant. 2500psi bond strength. It is thick and needs to be brushed on but can be spread out in a very light coat. Even a thin coat is an incredibly strong finish.
I have never heard of this method being used. But it has worked very well for me.
And anyone with a paintbrush & the epoxy can protect their wooden lure investments from rocks/bluefish/whatever. Even just casting creates chipped paint all around where the trebles hang.

haha good luck,
if its sparkles you want I would suggest mixing them with the epoxy first & then brushing it on. As opposed to sprinkling them on after you have coated the plug. It leaves a smoother finish and keeps the sparkles protected or from potentially falling off. More sparkles = less smooth finish. And be sure to mix the 2 part epoxy really well or you will have yourself a useless sticky plug. Let me know how they turn out....

I do the same thing when coating the guides on a rod. Add some sparkles to the coating and it looks real sweet. Made one for my granddaughter and it's killer when the sun shines on it.

Chief, I went on the DEVCON website and didn't see the one that was mentioned unless I missed it. Does that devcon have to be mixed and if it has to, does it have to be consumed immediately, is it a one shot deal. Just want to give the plugs a protective finish. Does the epoxy come out thick or thin. thanks

Freeportfrank. Wallyworld is my favorite place to get Devcon. Make sure that you get 2 Ton, not 5 Minute epoxy. If you see it at Wallyworld, but a few tubes as they run out fairly quick. I don't know why they don't just put out 20 tubes at a time?
Mix epoxy well and you have about 15 minutes working time to apply the epoxy. I usually mix enough to do 4 plugs at a time. Cheap acid brushes work, but the bristles come out once in awhile so I use the other end to pick out the hair so the hair goes into the handle. Its pretty thick so once you put it on, you may only have to only turn it once - 5 minutes after you hang it. After that, its pretty much set and won't sag. You can also thin it with Denatured alchohol, but only use a few drops. It increases the cure time a lot though so if you thin it, you'll have to flip the plug end for end a few times -watch the sagging.

I'm experimenting with West Systems epoxy - then putting gelcoat over it.
Made my first prototype spook this weekend. I highly doubt any bluefish is gonna put a crack in the gel coat. In fact they may be missing teeth after an encounter with the gel coat. Will be testing it this weekend.
