Fishing Darters, Metal Lips, Bottles Etc. in Strong Current

Looking for some info on this subject. I've done OK drifting eels but would like to gain some knowledge on how to most effectively fish plugs in water with a strong current like a river mouth or breachway.

What plugs(not jigs...seperate subject) do you prefer and how do you fish them in these conditions?

I like using deep diving metal lips in areas with a strong current and some deeper water. In the types of areas I ussualy fish I ussually like to place my casts so the plug will swing around through current seams or eddies. Ussually if the current is really ripping, I dont retrieve at all, I just let the plug do the work against the current.

I can add that if the current is really strong, you can always switch off the anti-reverse and backreel to keep your plug from rolling out or working too franticly. Makes it look like it's struggling and can't quite keep up with the current. Also, don't ever try a surface swimmer in that situation .

time to bust out the camera and take some pics of the sqiddy pencils in compromising postions with a revolver to them

this is another example of how the camera improves the look of the plugs. i've fished these pretty hard and they're dented and scratch but somehow look unused.

i got a couple 2 oz. pencils from m&d's over the weekend. the squid eyes are nice but i'll survive without 'em.

i won't ask for the whole jim sylvester method but do you ever find that you get hits while you're retrieving the plug vs. letting it strum in the current. also do you typically give the plug a good drift or vary your drift to cover more water?

These all work in the outflows I fish
Beachmaster darter 3 oz (yellow is better)
Capt Andy slopehead (even better with a skin)
Gibbs big bottle (probably the best of the three).

Damn, I need a better camera. This is what my dannies look like when fished pretty hard. All but one I'm still using.

you do realize the only reason they catch fish is because of the eyes, don't you ......

anyways, I thought the winter would go by a little bit faster with us razzing each other up.....I guess its time to hibernate now

letting it "strum" in the water usually produces larger fish for me anyways, espexcially with darters

great question on the length of the drift

vary until you find where the fish are, they are usually holding somewhere specific in the drift

Piemma would probably know this as i read in an old timers log book once......drifting the river on a 14 count, 16 count, 20 count, finally starting picking up the fish on 36 count, and there was fish every drift for the next 2 hours on the 36 count

That's awsome info and I appreciate that you're willing to share it. I thought that would be the case but it's nice to have the reinforcement.

Did you see the BM dannies on the other site. I know you want them bad....but that bad??? Might be your last shot at that the 3 oz. size.
