Van Staals are the greatest reel ever made, what do you know!
Caumsett, I got a laugh out of that, I thought "He doesnt know what hes getting himself into" when I read the name of the thread.

Standing on the water, casting your bread
While the eyes of the idol with the iron head are glowing
Distant ships sailing into the mist
You were born with a snake in both of your fists while a hurricane was blowing

A very wise man once told me that money is only an appearance...It's easy to make it appear you have lots but in actuality you can be mortaged to the hilt...
I also heard another saying in a movie once...
OHHHHHHH WAAAAYYYYY OHHHHHHHHHH

ecstatic
I just recovered my VS250 after 3 months of it being tossed on the bottom of the Atlantic in a very rocky locale in very swift currents and after brushing it off a little it is as smooth as it was when new (minus a little paint)...I'll have to re-build the drag and clean and service it to make sure that all is well inside, but by all appearances it should serve me well for years to come. I knew that the reel was tough and I've always loved to fish with it, but I must say that I was truly amazed by how after all that time under water and after all the abuse it saw being banged around in the rocks for three months that it was even recognizable let alone usable. When the fellow who found it called to offer it back, I thought "well O.K., I'll hang it on the wall as a memento cause it surely won't be any good for anything else". Well I'll tell you what...I'm sold! VS is the only way to go!

If VS's are what you like..that's fine. I'll stick to my 704's and 706's. They serve me well.

During the time that I didn't have my VS to fish with I went back to my 704zs and I must say that as a second choice there is nothing wrong with them...I used them exclusively for the previous 30 yrs. (even pre z and back to the spinfishers) and swore by them...but then I got my VS250 and as long as I have it to fish with my penns will always take back-up status position. Like with nearly everything else, there is good, better and best. The Penns are better, but Van Staal is best.
