How about a five gallon bucket full of green crabs spilled in the trunk of your parents' car?

Your mom's freezer frozen rock solid with bunker/pogies ...

The crisper in your mom's refridgerator filled with a dozen eels, not known to her on the day of your sister's wedding and reception at your house when she is trying to put food in the fridge but can't ...

a trout saved in a bag that your mom accidentally put back into a cereal box and stored in the cupboard ...

... the list goes on ... granted, your mom can't divorce you, but god bless that poor woman, she experienced a lot of bait faux pas over the years ...

Long story about Naked #^&#^&#^&#^&y (Dadbomba) from when i was a kid.
We went out to a local stream (in back of Rappin Mikeys new house), and used a long net to catch helgramites...anyhow, #^&#^&#^&#^&y brings then home and puts them in the kitchen sink.
We go to bed, Mom's working second shift, comes home and thinks the helgramites are coming up the pipes.
Shoulda heard her scream!!! Still remember it and it was 1975 when I was 4.
Later,
Rick

A cod head (with rack still attached) used to be a common sight staring out of the freezer when I was a kid.

Sometimes you don't have the time to make fish stock right away.

yes and it is not a pretty picture. Also had squid juice leak out on the car's carpet....Good thing that was a leased vehicle!

Goose...break down and pick up a seperate refridge and/or freezer just for bait and put it in the garage or shed. I had to a few years ago when the wife put her foot down and said..." there will be no bait in the food freezer from now on!" after the freezer went into some self defrost mode and some of the bunker chum I had in there was wafting unpleast oders on her good meats. Since then all is well, I picked up a big chest freezer and have lots of space for just about anything. They are pretty cheap.

squid juice

Standing on the wharf in Edgartown and listening to my wife tell me how bad the van stunk, because of the squid juice that had been soaking in the plywood for a couple of weeks when an old guy I had been jigging up butterfish with looks at my wife and says, Miss that smell gives the vehicle character". First time I ever chatted with Ray Metcalf. I always appreciated that remark. Bev was right though it did stink, but in a good way.

My poor Mom had to put up with all kinds of bait- storage fall- out when I was a teenager (now I'm Single & answer to no- one... and have two Refrigerators!)

Almost nightly in- season, she had to put up with the half- dozen or more large fresh bloody Pogies I snagged that day, for tommorrow Dawn's chunkin'... Smell was minimal though as they were fresh, & I learned to double- pack & cover them with black plastic bags so she didn't see eyes upon opening HER 'fridge. THAT I got away with thankfully!...

Her last straw was my Green Crabs in the garage! (I was on a great shore Blackfish/ 'Tog Surf bite those early Springs back in the '80s when I was maybe 16- 17 or so. A 13.5 the best of 'em... Yes, I have a pic-- & news clipping!)

I had placed a half- bushel of Greens in my cool garage on a hot June day in the cardboard container they had come in. Made sure to weight down the box- top 'till satisfied they couldn't escape. Well, it rained, so they were there a couple of days. No problem I thought-- they'll live... I'm sure you guessed it: the dampness eroded the bottom of the cardboard box though thick... & the crabs punched holes through & escaped all over the Garage!

Of course I found & picked up all I could... But I was finding crab carcasses for years! Need I tell you what that Garage smelled like, esp. summers? Luckily I went away to College for four years right after my "crime!"

We run an Inn and have had some interesting "discussions" about how the Health Dept. inspectors would feel about live eels in the kitchen fridge. Figure I'll just tell 'em we're doing sushi!

Lightbulb

a few years back i had an electrician come in to render some repairs.

my chest freezer, loaded with various frozen wild fish-stuffs (bait and otherwise), was right next to the fuse box.

electrician didn't tell me he had to unplug the chest freezer to access the fuse box.

which he did.

then he forgot to plug it back in.

given the freezer was hermetically sealed, more or less, i didn't find out about until a few weeks later, when i went to fetch a filet for din-din.

i gagged for a few seconds when i opened the lid.

i fumed for a week after that. you can only imagine the verbal abuse that company got from me. i was so pissed i was gonna hire a lawyer.

company ended up paying me dearly for the mistake.

Don't have a bait gone bad story, but my brother unplugged the freezer in the basement that my parents let me store a butchered deer in. He went to plug in a amp or some recording equipment and never plugged it back in. Lost about 60lbs of meat that was left. Parents couldn't figure out the smell - when I stopped by and my Dad asked me to see if I could figure out the smell - it took me about 30 seconds to realize what it was. Took a long time to get that smell out of the freezer and basement....

Yeah Jim I do have a frig and full size freezer in the garage for bait but it also serves as a drink frig, as it warms up so do the bait oders from fishing gear. Thers someing about bad squid,, one of the worst smells. Also, a cooler full of dead shiners that has turned to white milk.... the best
