with all these pretty tuna pics
We caught some ugly old blue sharks...
2 to the boat, lost a thirds. Not bad considering the number of dogfish around.. what a PITA
My father released one in the mid-upper 100's and I busted off on one in the 2's that grabbed a live dogfish and then rolled over the line.
The third was largest we have released. 10ft overall, 9ish ft fork got her right alongside, so the length measurement is pretty accurate. and one of the thickest blue sharks I've seen. Also the only blue shark I've ever caught that went up to the surface and almost all the way out of the water TWICE..
depending on what length/weight chart you believe she was solidly into the 300lb range, probably higher. A 9ft fork length can go anywhere from 300-almost 4, and this girl was F-A-T
30lb class gear (no harness, my back was paying for that yesterday). Scrappiest blue I;ve taken. she had some fight in her.

Money shot.
released unharmed. she was quiet on the wire, and I cut the wire right at the haywire and managed to retrieve the skirt and sinker.

No, we didnt tag. I did a lot of sharking in high school and college, crewed a bunch of Snug and OB tournaments on a boat out of here. We make maybe one shark trip a year now, usually as a shake-down cruise before tuna season.
Water temp was like 66-68

It is pretty cool when you see the protective eye flap cover the eye ball.
