kind of unfortunate. I look @ it like the Wal-Mart or Home Depot of outdoor supplies.

Cool

Get dizzy in those big places, usually go once to see them, than go

back to small B+T or sport shops.

Have to say that I would always prefer the local B&T experts to a big box retailer ... whether it's Surfland B&T, M&Ds, Saltwater Edge, King Cove ... and the local Web site and catalog guys like RI Saltwater and Surfcaster ... these guys have what I want, are great to deal with, usually are looking out for my best interests ...

... no disrespect to the big box retailers, but I will do what I can to stick with and support my local dealers ... without exception, as it's more than a lure (the lures I want to buy are not usually available at big box locations), but also the experience of hanging out with friends.

I was in the Cabelas store in Hamburg PA last week. I asked the manager of the fishing department if the store in East Hartford was going to have special saltwater products because it is the first store in New England. He said he did not think so. He said there is demand in his store for surfcasting gear and plugs. He has called the main office I think in Nebraska several times and asked for permission to carry certain products and he was told no. So he is fustrated. I think Cabelas will be great for waders and long underwear and gold bombers but I don't think the local guys we buy from will get hurt too bad.

Mass merchandising and specials, always on junk stuff,

so ya buy stuff you really don't need and prolly never use.

IMHO, on S/B and local is the only way to go.

The local B&T's around our way are geared towards Saltwater, and I will continue to go to them for all my Surf needs.

But when we start talking Freshwater or Ice Fishing I can't wait to hit The BassPro. Other than Bobbers and Crawlers, The B&T's around our way really don't carry anything for these alternatives.

the local B&Ts do carry what you need, you just need to ask. I can send you to several that would take care of your needs ... IMHO, you can't get a better partner for fishing gear than you can with the likes of the local shops ... and prices are essentially equal ...

Andy, I beg to differ, I've been in 5 different B&T's on the North Shore (Surfland, Al's, Rocco's, Beverly B&T, and Bridge St. B&T) and none of them carry anything close to a stocked freshwater department. They are geared for Saltwater, as well they should be, based on their client base.

And that being said I go to all those guys for all my saltwater needs....But if I need something for Freshwater I head to #^&#^&#^&#^&'s, Kittery Trading Post, or Wally World.

I need Senkos, Spinner Baits, and Rapalas....and the locals just don't carry a selection of those. Its not there fault people just don't go there for that stuff

From Georgetown, this is just not practical, but Roach's Sporting Goods on Mass Ave in Cambridge near Porter Sq. is good shop geared towards freshwater, not too pricey either. They have tons of great freshwater stuff. In fact, they don't even carry natural bait for the surf, but they carry extensive freshwater tackle and have a great selection of freshwater lures and natural baits. I even think they carry slugs on occasion.

Take advantage of it. I will still frequent the local B&T's but BP will get a share as well. These days it's all about getting the most from your dollar. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Use them and your money wisely.

Why even try.........

I hope they have an underwater tank like some of the others I visited. It will be cool to take the kids, also heard there is a restaruant there, we need more in the area. Its about 10 minutes from my house.

I wonder how much fishing info you can get from these stores? Yeah you can buy some gear cheap but the help is useless.

IMO your better off keeping it local. These big box stores will put a lot more pressure on local shops. Stores like Wallmart, bean et al have massive buying power and generally force product makers to sell to them at the lowest possible level. The local places just can't compete, you guys will be sorry when they are gone....but you got the best price on your tackle.

I look at LL Bean as a clothing store , not a tackle shop. i suppose they do sell tackle but for me , the thought wouldn't even cross my mind to get fishing tackle there. Boots , jackets , sweatshirts , jeans , maybe waders (I actually own orvis waders now) . Just my mind set.

or waders in stock ...in and out and no waiting...

change is inevitable...
