Cool What a blast!

Got out last night after the storm raced through, decided on the South shore. I was somewhat miffed to still see lightning as I drove down Rt 1, but was relieved to find that it was already over Block Island.
It turned out to be a pretty impressive light show, too (once I was comfortable that it wasn't going to be close enough to get me or my rod!)!

I had planned to fish the flow from the pond, but made a few casts into the surf along the beach as I walked over, thanks to a tip from a local that the blues had been present recently. I soon hooked into a nice blue, which set the evening off nicely (the splashing intermittently lit up by the lightning off the Block). Good 27" fish, apart from the fact that the little sod managed to blood me on the finger right by the nail with one of the spare trebles (tip of the hook only, thankfully).

I carried on over to the flow and jigged for the next hour and a half to no avail, despite the many shad evident, and made the sacrifice of one jig and half a leader to the fishing gods. I decided to head back to the beach.

The storm was finally abating; the clearing skies lit up now by the stars and the milky way, along with the occasional shooting star......and a whole lot of very co-operative bluefish.

An hour later, another eleven blues had been landed, all in the 25-28" range, and all spewing up 1" long baitfish. This of course bore no resemblance to the 7" RedFin that I had on (which by this time was looking decidedly less blurple!). Matching the hatch not needed!

Although not stripers, I had a blast, even with one seriously steamed blue managing to use it's tail to throw sand in my eye. With GP contact lenses in. At night. One hand holding the pliers and the other holding the liphooker on a hooked blue that was doing it's level best to get me just that little bit closer so that it could really show me just how upset it was.......

Somehow (this never usually happens except in Hollywood) I managed to blink enough times to clear the sand, unhook the sod and get it back to the water.

At 11.30, the blues either moved off or decided that the fun was over. Either way, I turned around and walked back to the car, a grin on my face and my back and arm muscles well exercised.

Gods, I love fishing.
