So last year about this time, there was a guy fishing the west end of the canal around Bourne scenic park early one morning. Apparently he got tangled in the broken off leader of a hook buried in a bass that went about 39lbs. I was fishing the evening before and got busted off by a good fish in that realm of that area, so I was particularly interested in the story when I heard about it in one of the shops that morning. In any case, it had a steal leader and hook and not a jig so it wasn't my fish... but a cool story none the less. I think it was brought up here back then.
fast forward to Saturday evening...
A buddy and I were fishing in the same relative general area as described above. After awhile a guy walking through stopped behind us, watched us fish, chatted a little. He was very respectful, didn't hijack us or anything.. After a bit I land a nice fish. He came down and helped me out a bit with the fish as I was in a bit of a precarious position. After I got the fish revived he went back up to the canal road and watched some more as we fished. After a few minutes, since he was being very cool, I told him he was welcome to join us. He thanked us, saying he didn't want to step on anyones toes etc... basically if we all handled ourselves the way he did in relation to crowds, asked where it would best for him to stand, etc. Basically if we all acted as he did there would be alot less confrontation in some of these spots. After a few minutes, he hooks into a real nice fish. It is giving him a run for his money, but he ends up beating the fish in a hairy situation where he could have easily gotten worked. So the point of the story... fish is about 46 or 47" long and minimum 35lbs, but it was pretty fat and could well be over 40lbs. My buddy helps the guy with it and when he goes to take the jig out for him, it is tangled in a mess of braid attached to a leader buried in the gutt of the fish. It may have come out of the fish during the landing, but most likely the jig was never in the fish. The guy was concerned about whether it was hooked or just snagged, but to me it doesn't seem to matter as that fish was definately going for the jig in any case. Pretty cool to see happen.
I don't think he is someone from the board, but I waited a bit in case he was and was going to post...
As an aside, another guy walked in later after he had left. Went right below us down tide and proceeded to repeatedly cast out over our lines, snagging me on his seconcd cast. He was casting about half the distance we were so it wasn't that our drifts were done and he was casting in way that we would be well clear of him. We would wait for him to cast, then cast, and he would be casting again when we were mid way throught the drift. Or he would mess with something for a minute, then cast right over us instead of waiting for us to finish the drift. Really would have caused trouble if one of us hooked a good fish and his line was over us. I don't think he caught anything
Although I prefer to fish without cheesy dance music blasting. The guy that got the fish kept saying, "man they sure seem to be having a good time over there" 
I figure someday I might have to take the kids to the Bourne park for the halloween party and I can do some fishing.
