I used to be able to get this at Stop & Shop and a few seafood shops..Havent been able to find it for about a year....The kids hated the smell of it..Anybody know what I'm talking about or know where I can still get it??...

I'm going where I'm going...

SKD,

I know what you're talking about...it's like the hankering you might get for a taco and nothing else will do. My grandmother, a Canuck from Nova Scotia, always kept a jar (tightly sealed) under the kitchen sink (no need for refrigeration -- a salted, smoked herring will out survive a Twinkie when it comes to shelf life) and I've got to confess that those stinky little fish-stogies bring back fond memories. I think I'll try and hunt some down myself. I'll let you know when and if I find some.

Have you ever eaten poached, salted herring? A mouthful of bones in every bite, but they sure make a great boiled dinner with potatoes and onions.

Mike

You guys must be talking about Newfoundland Lollipops!

When I was a boy one of my uncles use to have some in his fridge. Dried, smoked, salted herring. I tell you I could go for one right now. I'm don't know where he bought them. I think a fish market in town.

SKD, just like your grandfather. I was there the day mom and dad brought you home and I never knew you like those fishes. Please don't sneak them in the truck next year on the Vineyard!! Sleeping on the beach in the ranger with you bro is an experience of a lifetime without smoked herring along for the ride. If you really need that kind of a fix eat a pogie.

400 Somerville Ave. If I were you, I would call in advance to make sure its in stock, in the interest of saving gas. I've seen them there before, however. They are smoked brown fillets about 10 inches or so long, and they come in maybe 6 to 8 fillets per pack right. They are in the back, in the packaged fished section (there is no fish monger). Is that what your looking for?
