fish scent

Any striper fisherman use fish scent, spray on or otherwise on their lures? I got a couple of poppers from Lex for Christmas and it says to spray the "skirt" with fish scent, and it will release slowly when fishing. Where would the skirt be? the bucktail? Sounds like a neet idea....

Lennyr I have used scents alot in fresh but never in salt. I don't see why it would not work and I would think that some bunker oil on those lures should work.

An "old timer" once told me he soaked his rubber in pogey oil all winter long. Couldn't hurt I guess.

about a decade ago we use to soak foam pipe insultion sleves in anchovy oil to and then cut them into 8 inche pieces and put them on daisy chains to attact Blue fin. Did it work I really don't know, but it made us feel real professional. I used to call it Tuna Vodoo.

I'd only say this and then I'll drop it. Think about using bunker oil on anything, yes it will work, but when was the last time you saw abundant schools of large bunker? Then ask yourself why that is. Walk down any Walmart health food isle or any of those stores that are in every mall and look at all the products using bunker oil harvested by Omega. Do we really want to add to the demise of what once was a very important part of the food chain up here and why so many large stripers were caught around these parts when bunker were so thick?

I've tried to insure that the scents I use are actually free of bunker oil, because I don't want to contribute to that fishery going down. I still have the only fish oil quart I ever bought, still half full and it will never be used.

thanks, never thought much about the where the stuff comes from , but will from now on. I now spray my lures and bucktails with WD40 and have done pretty well, But don't like releasing the oil in the water. You fisherman always see the different sides of fishing issues and I truly enjoy your posts!

I guess it simulates the oil trail of a wounded bait fish. It seems to work for me. Caught some nice stripers on freshly sprayed poppers. You see a slight sheen in the water behind the lure. I vacation on Lake Murray S.C. and have done a little sweetwater striper fishing. A fishermen I met there showed me and I tried it at home. Its pretty good for hooks to.

I tried some a few years ago...spraying it on a plug but I didn't notice much difference. However I think the plug doesn't hold enought of the scent. I think you need to have a fillable sponge-cavity within the plug to really load up on scent. I think it might be productive.

I have been told about some sommerical rod and reel bass fisherman that soak their baits in some kind of oil and have been told it is killer.

Something to work on....

One of you plug makers should design a big swimming plug that has a intenal sponge in it that could be filled with bunker oil and then slowly released on retrieve...I would buy 4 or 5 of them at 25 bucks per. I don't think just spraying the outside of the lure is enough.

I may just punch a small hole in the side of the fish oil container and drag it behind the boat and see what bites it

I have also heard of using WD-40, forget where though.
Also RustOLeum paints used to use menhaden oil in their paint products (as the rust inhibitor ??) as well -- don't know if they still do.
