Can I put a over size seat over the butt and build it up just like when you build a new one? Or will this be to big of seat??

Depends...

Joe.. depends on the rod... if it's a fast taper rod.. chances are it's gonna need a big reel seat.. I'm doing the same thing to one of mine now.. It's an older MB96.. and it worked well... After bonding the seat to the blank, I put on a double layer of cork tape.. turned out sweet...
Good luck
Bob

You might want to think about going with a Fuji plate type reel seat. Wrap the ends and coat.

They make a really nice plate style reel seat now too. it has plastic inserts in the hoods and a place to wrap in the center as well as the two ends.

By his post I think that is what he has.

Get the closest size seat that will fit over the butt. Strip cork tape, scuff up area where seat will go with light sand paper. Clean with Acetone put ring of masking tape where the bottom of seat will be make sure seat is snug on the tape area but movable. Next pull back seat use 1 strip of cloth dry wall tape to fill void about mid way up seat. Slide seat back over the dry wall tape and masking tape to desired area. Align with guides tape off bottom the seat to the blank so no leakage. Stand up rod slightly warm up seat with hair dryer and pour epoxy in till it fills up, wait a few min and repeat till filled. leave rod standing up till next day when set up apply cork tape to bottom and butt cap you’re done.

Thanks Mike and everyone else that replied. I am going to get a seat and try to slide it over the end. I thought this was the way I was going to have to do it but just wanted to make sure . I needed a few words of wisdom.

Thanks Macojoe

All set! I put a 22 seat over the end and epoxy it in place the way we all learned at the class and doubled the cork tape. Looks and feels great.
Now I have a great rod that I once hated because of the tape on seat.
Thanks All !!
