Warning for RI guys

The break ins are really bad this fall. Night before last 8 boats in my marina were broken into, lots of damage and lots of valuable stuff taken. I decided to cut my season short and go get everything off the boat. Its been on the news lately and it seems to be happeneing all over the state. IN south county and in the bay it seems to be particulary bad, but I hear its also happening more than usual over on the east side of the bay.

A 15 year old getting jumped in the canal, and people breaking into boats... it's a beautiful world.

I'm glad you weren't one of the unfortunate ones.

Its not just RI it is happening here in NC as well. As folks get desperate they view boats as easy pickins as most marinas have little to no security.

When times get tough there's no shortage of victims. I'm glad you packed it in before it happened to you. Sad state of affairs everywhere huh?

6 boats broken into this august in pt judith salt pond on moorings... an then I get a call from the harbor master at work that he caught my boat drifting right out the channel!!! someone unclipped it from the mooring, and for some reason was set adrift. found with the motor down, but perko battery switches still off for some odd reason ... (failed/spooked during theft?) it was on its way out passed the block island ferry!!! makes me nervous for next year... any suggestions as to how i can lock a 19' cc to a mooring?

sad. very sad. When times get tough people see you boat owners as "rich guys" and you can afford to take the hit. ( a re-distribution of wealth kind of attitude)
When living in NY there were a group of guys stealing OB motors and they could not catch them. Nearly every night another motor was stolen in the area. Turns out there were a couple of divers who had a way to detach them from the water and float them off somehow. I recall reading how they "caught" them. One guy was sleeping on his boat when he heard a noise, he looked around and didn't see anything, then he noticed the bolts turning on his OB. He reached back grabbed a spear gun and nailed one of the divers. Problem, solved.
