Dockside Pogie Pen
I'm just starting a winter project, and looking for some tips and advice.
Looking to make a fairly large pen to hold bunker at the dock.
Right now I think I can fit 8' x 4' x 4' next to my slip. Thinking about pvc for the frame with plastic fence material for the sides and then making some sort of cover as well.
any design advice would be appreciated.
also - the harbor has very good tidal flow (10ft) - how long can I reasonably expect to keep them alive if I cast net them, or at least weed out the injured ones that were snagged.
I read an article a long time ago in sws about this, but couldn't find it.
Thanks.

Jay,
I have one that is 5 feet tall 5 across and is round. It is made out of the plastic coated lobster trap material. You can easily keep 100 pogies in it. I net mine and throw them in as a huge group. They last for a REAL long time. I keep mine at an UDL on the cape. I'll take some pics and show you. Simple to make with just crimps and the top is crimped on and kept shut by a bungee cord. As long as the water is flowing they will feed and stay healthy. Very few died a handful all year. I just use a dip net to take what I need and off we go. Pm me for more specifics.

pvc and plastic or coated wire . round or ovel is best .cover top w/ 2in hard styrafome for floation and to keep sun out .dont let i sit on bottom ..6 x 4 x 4 = 75 w/o crowding . throw net or 2 1/2 " gill net 50 ft long by 8ft drop works best....get permit if needed

I got the smaller one from shoalsbaitpens.com. Does the trick for me to compliment the onboard livewell. As far as longevity, it depends on a couple of things. This float just below the surface, so being moored in shallows in hot weather will cut the expected life expectancy. I also am snagging most of my pogies, which can add to mortality.
Anyone selling a pogie net?

i've got a plastic coated wire one that needs a little love. it's roughly 5' by 4'. if any of you guys want it, you can take it away. it's in hull and i have a bunch of extra wire material. for what it's worth i used to sink mine at the slip to avoid pogie thieves

Hey Jay or anyone interested. I made these several years ago. I use to keep them in Lake Assawompset filled with Herring, when you could. Made of PVC. You could float them with noodles on top I would think. almost 4' high and 5' across. Mesh is pvc mesh which I guess could be breached by a seal or something big. Wire mesh probably work better but PVC is not as rough on the noses of the fish though. Any way I don't use them any more and would let you use one and see if you wanted to give me a few bucks if they work. Probably cost me 100 bucks to make the 2 of them but I wouldn't want anywhere near that much. A pain to transport though.

Jay, I bought a real nice one a few years back at Cape Fisherman's Supply, might be worth a look there too.

HEY!
watch out when your cleaning the boat off, bleach/soap in the water. kills them in minutes. i lost a tun one day because someone dumped soapy water near them.
