The Legend of Mermaid...

Hey guys, I was wondering about the legends and mythlogies of the Mermaids. Every movie I have seen about them is that they can be hot, sexy, banging, salty, and sweet women, or they are really vicious, supernatural, ugly, screeching, and killer monsters of the sea. What are they? I have heard that there are some documented dtories about the mermaids like a mummified mermaid in a seahorse size. And I wanted to know if you guys believe the legend of mermaids?

Yeah, Scotch, you just reminded me that I need to fly back home and drink a wine cooler and go to sleep.

mermaids were originally thought of as creatures who lured ships too close to shore where they crashed on the rocks. As best as we can tell , it had its roots in the songs that the wind sometimes generates at very stormy areas like large points of land. these areas were typically stormy and rocky and had seals resting on the rocks. if you've ever seen seals , especially the grey ones , they sure do look like a person is looking back at you from the water. so combine the thoughts of a tired sailor , a year out at seas , longing for a babe , rounding the tip of South America where the wind howls and sings and the seals look back at you from the rocks and magically , they see Mermaids. they sail in to get a better look and then get caught in the currents and crash on the rocks. All sounds logical to me.

Saltheart....wouldn't that also go back to the tale of the Sirens in Homer's Odyssey?

I get one every season, but the conditions have to be just right. The couple times I've lucked into them all shared a few things, brutally hot summer days, very little early morning action and I fished into the noon sun being stubburn, even to the point of going offshore 7 miles for some cod. Seems they only hit when your tired, overheated, frustrated and need something pulling badly.

I remember taking a walk out to Naps one night before it got dark, and seeing 3 mermaids sunning in the buff, I dont know who was more embarrased.

saltheart- about the mermaids luring a aroused and horny ship to their doom, do you fish and read a pornography at the same time? it seemed "logical" theory to me...for that i might agree with you on this

steve- actually, sirens are a trio of sexy-faced and disfigured bootified, whack-off females who lure idiots to their doom and eat them up. all you have to become a completely deaf person like me, and i can slap them silly with a new iserali ak47 model. mermaids come in many forms of sailors' mythlogy in the ocean. they are generally monsters... watch the dagon on the sci-fi channel.

gotstriper- what part did you pull them?

daves- did u drop your pants or wader when looking at them in buff?

fishsmith- nobody wants seals because they are a bunch of crapping animals who will fall on you at any moment, like merlin who transformed himself into a walrus and sat on the hideous witch in the sword of the stone. another thing, if u ever encounter a mermaid with a blue nipple, don't make love to her because it means STD in their mermaidlogy.

bill- pull me me in, i wanna see how they can make me drop my wader and u can take a pic of it and post it on the board...

mrmacy, I had a similar experience once with one of those sugar cubes. It went something like this:
I was once out beachcombing, one very hot summer's day, when I thought I'd lay myself down to rest in a big field with tall eelgrass. I laid there in the sun, felt it caress my face as I fell asleep and dreamed. I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie, and that I was the star. This really blew my mind, the fact that me, an overfed, long-haired, weeping gnome should be the star of a Hollywood movie.
There I was. I was taken to a place, the Hall of the Merman King. I stood high upon a sand dune, naked with the world in front of every kind of mergirl. There were strong ones, tall ones, short ones, brown ones, black ones, round ones, big ones, crazy ones. Out of the middle came a merlady. She whispered in my ear, something crazy. She said:

Spill the wine, dig that mermaid.
Spill the wine.
Spill the wine, dig that mermaid.
Dig that Merrrrrrrrmaid.

I could feel a hot flame of fire roaring in my back as she disappeared into the sea. But soon, she returned. In her hand was a conch shell of wine; in the other, a glass. She poured some of the wine from the conch into the glass, and raised it to her lips, and just before she drank, she said:

Take the wine, take that mermaid.
Spill the wine, dig that mermaid.
Spill the wine, dig that mermaid.
Dig that Merrrrrmaid.
