Sea Run Brown's in Scorton Creek ?? - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Ok cabin fever got me...I'm going to the Cape next weekend for an event and I heard that there are Sea Run Trout in the Creek and its not frozen.
HELP !!!! I want to fly fish for them...is a 9wt to heavey and what kind of flies and size should I use. I am new to the fly fishing area but I did have a ball last season

Trout with a 9wt

try like a 5-6wt.

9 wt is rediculously too "heavey" use a 5 or 6 weight . Scorton used to be pretty good several years ago until some magazine articles targeted it and caused it to be overfished. Before the articles the largest searuns ran 3 - 5 lbs. on the average there. Now, there stocked trout about one pound. Forget about wrenching them up with a 9 wt. It would be like using a canon to shoot a rabbit!

If I were to fish for them again, I'd use small sand eel pattern or small "mummy" ie "kelly" patterns. Incidently, a lot of small stripers over winter there as well as the Barnstable Marsh. Still, this require a small rod this time of year.

Thanks for the advice...I don't own a lighter fly rod so maybe I'll just brake out the trout rod...11 foot Ben Doerr with a 6500 baitrunner

Well, Bobbike did you get to the creek and fish?
Yes, the 9 wt. fly rod is a little big for the trout, but in a big wind it will get you to the water. Note I use a 6wt. for stripers at the creek all the time. So if you are looking to fish the creek a lot I would think about a liter weight rod. Saltydog should be able to "hook" you up with one. If you are not looking for a fly rod than may I suggest that you take a lite spinning rod with some 6 to 12 lb. test line. At the end of your spinning line add a small slide weight then a swivel.At the end of the swivel tie on your 6 to 9 foot leader and the fly of your choice. Now you are Carolina spin/fly fishing. Throw the line up stream of the flowing current and let the fly swim down current mend line as it passes you and hold on for the fish. I hope this help you out the next time you fish the creek. Hey SCKid, I happened to be down the creek today test swimming a bunch of freshly made lures. We were down the road just off 6A before you get to the creek.
Funny thing I got a hit on the very first cast with this funny looking plug. I coudn't believe it, and it was still incoming. Nice day though. It won't be too much longer I hope.

Thanks for the shout back. I was at the creek today too. Had to walk in, to much snow in the driveway to get up in with the car. Had to check out the cottage and beach for storm damage. The cottage is fine but my poor beach just keeps washing away. O well, great day to fish just a little wind and lots of sun to keep the old bones warm. 28 days & counting till I get to open up my little bit of heaven. Glad to hear that the fish are still around. Did you see the fish? Was it Mr.sea run or Mr.hold over striper? March & April are 2 good months to warm up with. A nice day like today you can start getting your timing back casting or throwing and then get that set your hook timing back to. Hope to see you real soon on the water. I didn't see the fish, just felt it hit. BM and I tried small jigs and sluggo rubber but didn't get anything even after the tide changed.

I didn't get over to the creek but had a great time on the Cape anyway...I get down to the area of the creek a few times a week, so maybe it be time to strat carrying a small rod with me..

Bobbike: The Kid here. Have you made it down to the creek yet? I did today and took the shutters off the cottage. Great day to fish too. Got the 6 wt. out with a 200 grain depth charge line on it and started beating the water with it. No fish yet,but it was great to start a new season. Hope to see you at the CREEK !!!! I hit the MSBA show all weekend so, no I haven't been down the creek yet, But I have put a rod in the Jeep with some small tackle...Its getting very close
