Maine Stripers
I live in a Albany NY and have fished the Hudson River for years now with good success. My family and I are going to Maine the last week in July and staying in the Scarborough area. I have surf casting gear and was looking for some advice on location and bait.
I look forward to hearing back from anyone that can point me in the right direction.

Google earth. Scarborough Beach. Mouths of rivers. Sand bars. Saco Bay Tackle, Route 1 Saco, ME.

i'll be in Saco (two towns south) next week.
i'll try to remember to PM you if i come across anything useful. Feel free to PM me a reminder if you don't here from me.
in general, smallish plugs aroung the outflows or bait on the bottom usually produce pretty well. the best bait is also the biggest PIA to get, sand worms. Dig them with a pitch fork at low tide near the waterline. Fish them on a fish finder or high low rig around high tide near some structure. Some places fish better at other stages, but high is usually good on the open beach up there. Fresh clams or fresh mackeral also work well, but can be hard to find. The frozen crap at the bait shops will work, but not nearly as well.

Define "Surfcasting Gear" Pluggin or chunkin?
Camp Ellis to the South is OK. Be sure to try the seafood at Huot's
Goosefaire Brook, parking is almost gone.
Higgins Beach area can be good IF you find access and deep water over rocks. Remember, Maine tides are big & fast, don't get stuck out far without being able to get in quick enough on the incoming...

I fish the kittery to kennebunk section of Maine every summer for a couple of weeks. Pretty much what they said above. Often do well in the surf with clams. The bait shop ones work okay. Sandworms are the best. I always carry a plug or 2 in case I see any action. And fly fishing the tidal rivers has been some of my best fun. Fish are smaller, but a blast. Have a great time.

You have Scarborough Beach, then there is Ferry beach as well, both close to each other. Both are fishable, and you can do well, if the fish are in.

john, when are you up there? there's some parking for goosefair near where I stay. Let me know if you need to know where. its about half way between the river and the rock pile to the south. |

Yeah, I remember the parking at Higgins Beach being kind of a problem. There's a lot near the entrance to the beach road that gets kind of full in the summer; there's almost no parking further down on the beach. I believe the walk from the lot to the inlet is close to a mile; did it in a pouring rain once  The best time to be there is on a weekday with the outgoing tide. |
