Planning to bring kids crabbing
I know this is not regarding striper but my kids keep asking me if they can go crabbing. Any suggestions I would gladly appreciate and I don't mean to burn any crab spot but you can pm me.
Thanks.

I have seen tons of blue crabs around but nothing worth eating. I think I'm going to give it a shot after work. It's almost that time mmmmmmmm. A Sunday afternoon with a few of the guy's a couple dozen crabs and a couple dozen beers. OH YEAAAAAHH!!!!!!!!!!! Someone told me hoop nets are illegal in MA for crabs. I can't find anything saying that you can't use them. Anyone have any info on this?

I fun way for the kids to crab is to tie a chicken wing on a fishing line with a sinker to keep it down. they get to reel in the crabs, its a nice way to do it, very smooth and its pretty fun stuff. Dont know if its agaisnt the rules in RI but its fine in CT according to a grren cop.

Oh yeah chicken wings are illegal in RI but chicken necks and drumsticks are ok.The wings are legal if they have barbecue sauce on them.
Crabbing is fun.

Crabbing is fun, one of the simple pleasures.
I recall the first time I took my kids crabbing, they didn't want to go. It was hot and humid and the Xbox seemed like more fun to them in the AC. I forced them. The crabs were in and I knew it would be good. They had a ball out there. In the end we were chasing them in a dingy with one of the boys standing in the bow with a crab net like Que-Quay ready to harpoon Moby. Over there! Over there! We got a nice load cooked and picked and ate them. And at dinner one of them said, you were right dad, that was fun, are we going again tomorrow?
I normally wait till august but I bet you find some in the warmer reaches of the ponds.

Follow Vic's pm. My kids had a blast and want to go back just to crab. Been twice in a week. The higher stages of the water were better.

I used to crab in the canals in Dewey Beach, DE when I was a kid. Definitely a good time. Chicken legs were deadly.

If the chicken is frozen, it will thaw out quickly and sink by itself, if it's fresh chicken, that should sink rather quickly too.
Like going from mono to braid, you will notice a LOT more of the action when not using any weight....and on those days that us crabs are finicky, any added resistance will cause us to drop the offering as the weight will sometimes get hung up on river bottom objects...
Scoop with confidence or you'll never catch me. .......also remember, on cloudy days..I'll see you before you see me.

Send my bro, Rappin Mikey a PM...he's all abotu crabbin. I am a fan of chix necks...cheap and tough. Like Bloo said, scoop with confidence. I like to put the net in the water (need a long handled one) and bring the crab to the net.
This probably doesn't apply to crabblin with the kids, but Mikey and I used to bring some trivial pursuit cards to make the slow times more lively!
