New JET - question on arrival condition
Just got a Jet mini 1014i from Amazon. The box arrived pretty beat up. The lathe looks like it has been set up in a shop for six months.
How did your Jet arrive? Anyone have trouble with damage in shipping or less than expected quality when delivered?
See attached pic.

I've made a ton of purchases from Amazon.
Was it purchased new or from the used section on Amazon?
That definitely doesn't look new.

If only surface stuff and works great I wouldn't worry but I would want to know why it looks like that. It shouldn't

new or used
there a mess with oil sometimes...look at the centers and the belt for use...I've seen the boxes beat up......I've seen 4 come out of the box...there probly comming from over seas...if they've been used the centers may show wear..pull them out and look at the arbor part for wear or if they've been banged out with the tool...the toolrest may have wear too

that was my first thought too. Just spray some wd 40 on a rag and wipe off. Pretty much used on all machinery like stated above to keep machined surfaces corrosion free as they sit to be bought or stored for periods of time. If it looks good after than that is all it is. Tons of stuff sticks to that stuff, like honey, until it hardens up a bit. The chips in the paint and other dings shouldn't be there though. That would make me concerned, although it is pretty hard to wreck a heavy piece of machinery like that unless they threw it off the loading dock or something. I would still inquire why it came in looking like that.

I agree, just cosmetic and there is no such thing as a pretty machine. They are all ugly in my book

thanks for the replies
Thanks for the quick feedback. I did call the Jet distributor. They said the shippers are sometimes harsh. I bet most of the "gunk" is just surface protection, but it does look like the machine has been beat a little during shipment. That’s all probably OK, but on closer examination, I noticed that the hand wheel has a nasty scar. It looks like it was scrapped on the pavement. Can't risk a future bearing problem from that. I plan to send it back to Amazon. I may pick one up from a Woodcraft store. See and touch it first. None of the local box stores sell the lathes around here.
For now, back to the shop smith...and the boat.
Thanks again.

Contact Amazon before you ship it. They should send another machine and provide shipping papers for the return of this machine.

FYI woodcraft has been doing a lot of promo stuff lately. if you are on their mailing list you already know this, if not get on it! they have been sending 10-15% off coupons and having some decent sales too. i got my jet there. the price is a bit more than online BUT you pick it up and leave with it.
