At least they nabbed one of these guys...

For almost 2 weeks these boats were pounding our shores really close...dragging. There were at one time 18 boats from all over the place, NY, RI... While enjoying a day at the beach I watched with my binoc's and said to my wife...those guys are catching something, they are out there every day all day and night dragging the hell out of that area. Herein lies the problem, commercial fishermen have little respect for the law, they exploit anything they can get away with and know that not much is enforced or can be done. I doubt this guy even shows up and they probably give him a fine so lame it doesn't even cover the cost of the fuel used for the chopper. IMO, you make a "mistake" like this and that is it, you are done comm fishing forever. Take his lic away! You don't suppose he dragged up any SB in those squid nets off of squibby this time of year do you?

A fleet of fishing boats south of Chilmark generated a lot of curiosity. The boats were all fishing for squid but not all of the captains were playing by the rules.
Alerted to the presence of the boats, Environmental Police Sergeant Matt Bass hooked a ride with the Coast Guard onboard a Jayhawk helicopter.
The flyover inspection turned up a Rhode Island fishing boat squid fishing inside Massachusetts's three-mile limit. The captain did not have a state coastal access permit and he was using an improper net mesh, Sergeant Bass said.
The boat left quickly, but did not escape the long arm of Mr. Bass who contacted Rhode Island environmental police.
Anthony Faciano of Wakefield, R.I., received a summons to appear in Edgartown District Court in connection with the fisheries rules violations.

FYI ;

2 weeks ago a local well known striper fisherman was setup by the RI DEM . he pulled in to the launch ramp @ PJ in the daylight with 20 bass / the DEM waited until he had pulled his boat & had strapped it to the trailer . they then slooped town , confiscated the fish,boat, truck, & he got a ride with handcuffs on .

Last week / after a couple of days of warning . the DEM raided a bunch of commercial steamer diggers for being over the line . they had it setup / cuz back At the boatramp they had trucks with trailers waiting . they arrested a few commercial diggers/divers & also some rec.
the boats where ordered to follow the state boat to the ramp / where everything was confiscated . they go to court this Monday & if they plead quilty they pay a fine & hope they don,t lose their licenses & get their rigs back ;
Some are talking about fighting it , There is a gray area on the issue of the line >>>>>>>> but ><been there & done that .too expensive to fight city hall .
it didn,t stop there . The DEM actually took video of the boats that were there . so even thro some screwed ./ that use to work for us ::
During the week they went to marina ,s based on the registeration of the boats & took & charged a few more ;
Now they only have 999 to catch ><><>

You hear about these arrests, but you never hear the result. The case of Mr. Sean W Bradshaw, arrested for poaching last Sept, still has not been resolved (as far as the CT court site reports)....after being on the docket 7 times and being postponed each time. What's up with that?

The squirrel cops were writing revenue boosting tickets to people on the Rte 88 bridge in Westport last night. On my way by I saw 3 people put way undersized scup into their white buckets and when I came back the cop was parked on the bridge and he was writing all 3 tickets. I Blew my horn and gave him the big thumbs up. Good to see them getting these people. They also inspected all the boats coming into the state ramp.

If only this enforcement wasn't taking place strictly as a Funding Reacquisition Program.

I emailed the EPO's main office two yeARS AGO AND COMPLAINED ABOUT THREE SQUID BOATS fishing about a mile off of South Cape Beach. I asked them in the email how hard it was to request that the State Police fly the chopper over them to get a GPS fix for prosecution. The SP's will lift off at the drop of a hat. Next day they were gone.

And this guy has been a 'high hook" for a lot of years. He doesn't post here but if I put his name up almost all the RI guys would recognize it.
I was really suprised when I heard about it because this guy has always been in the top 1 or 2% with the biggest bass. Fishes BI almost exclusively. And, no it was NOT #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&.

No boat, back in the suds.

I was both surprised and saddened to hear it. Sounded like a big risk for someone to take and unfortunately for him it ended badly.

Different guy, although I heard the story second hand, so I can't 100% confirm.

This guy's name should be plastered in the papers AND on all fishing sites that deal with bass fishing etc. This isn't taking a 20.78 inch fluke...it's 20 bass...only caught ONCE? Can only imagine how many other times this has happened and how many other guys are doing it. The market should also get strung up if they know that the fish are illegally caught!
So get a MA license and launch out of MA...does that make it legal, or are they still considered RI fish? I would imagine that if DEM pulled up as he was haulin' fish over the side off BI he'd have his ass in a sling anyway...deservedly so!

Why is no one mentioning the persons name? Is it a secret or something? I would think you would want to expose a cheater.

May be tempting for some to do so, but by the sounds of it the DEM already took care of that. The internet tar and feathering thing always leaves a bad taste in my mouth regardless of the severity of the infraction/individual involved.

I am surprised it took this long for the "RI guy" info to come out. Looks like team RISAA may be losing a big fish on the boards and a heavy hitter in the Cup. Grab your coffee and sit back

In my mind, since I heard second hand, it isn't prudent. If it is in the paper/news etc.. it is fair game, but for now it is not our place to throw it out there.
AND, I'm not condoning it at all, in RI, if commercial season was open and he had 6, then it could be oversight, but 20 bass in a different state is malicious intent... just don't think we should toss out names second or third hand...

Sandman, I may know the exceptions, but I know some straight arrow commercial fisherman as well, so that is a braod brush to paint with!
