Boat lifts (in florida)
In my recent journeys I noticed nearly all the folks living on the water had lifts that jacked the boat clean out of the water in some cases like 5 feet above the surface. I know they have a longer season but I was wondering, why we don't see them up here? I would think that for those lucky enough to live on the water with a dock... you could keep your boat on the lift year round even here and avoid all the storm effects, bottom paint, electrolysis, ice, etc associated with sitting in salt water. Question...why don't we do this here?

I see the lifts on the big freshwater lakes (NH, VT, NY).

Why not SW docks? Is it the possible heaving of the poles in a hard freeze?

Reason maybe not found on SW up here in the NE is the tidal differential or an artifact of the rocky coastline or access or all? Not sure I understand the hard freeze, that should be worse in freshwater lakes not SW? |

If I had a place on the water I'd think about it. I don't see them in NJ either it.s like a four season use thing.

I asked a mate when I was down there a few years ago. He said they have to raise them, or they would be replacing lower units and thru hulls weekly.
80 degree salt water is an order of magnitude more corrosive than the NE water, and the growth is viscious.
So I guess its just a matter of $$$$$$$$$$.
For the ~6 mos of boating (3 months this year LOL) it just isn't worth it......

I had lunch at Marina Bay, Quincy, today and a couple of slips had a pair of pontoons with somekind of electrical/hydraulic connection to them. Looked like they could be lowered-pull boat into slip and then raised again. They ran the length of the slips which were 25' or so. Could handle a decent sized boat if that's what they are used for.

There are two lifts out side padnarum, big dollar bling boat... trip 350's.... summer homes. God bless'um , I guess. hee hee
