Ford 2004-2007 F150 4WD Systems

This is for any who has a 2004-2007 Ford F150 4 Wheel Drive Truck.

The truck was making some noise from the left front wheel, kind of like a grinding or bearing noise, also felt like 4wd wasnt working. Had to take it to the dealership.

I just had all the front actuators replaced, vaccum lines cleaned or replaced and the IWE solenoids replaced.

They found that vaccum lines, actuators and solenoids were full of rust and not allowing the 4wd to engage, it runs on vaccum which is controlled by the solenoids opening and allow the diaphram to open.

This is a common problem on these trucks and the new parts are redesigned not to rust out. Seems like any part that low in the axle should of been made not to rust in the first place. Ford knows this but no recall has been made.

These tend to fail around 35 to 40,000 miles, which the warranty only covers to 36K.

Luckily I purchased the extended warranty which goes to 6oK, so I paid the $100 deductible and was on my way.

So if you have one of these trucks I suggest you get it looked at asap, even if its not acting up, you probably wont find out until you go use the 4wd like i did. it didnt engage and i got stuck.

I had the same problem last year on my 04 but at 120K miles (Great Truck) it is far from out of warranty. Makes almost a grinding noise when cold as moisture can freeze in the solenoid and not keep the 4WD hub fully diengaged ...

It went away after a short bit but I'm keeping an eye on it for happening this year. I've had no 4WD issues at all with it.

Had the same problem in my 97. Midas said I needed a new tranfer case for $2400 labor included. My local mechanic replace 2 solenoids and some vacumn line and a couple of other things in the front end and 4WD works great for $385.00

No boat, back in the suds.

Bring back the old 4 wheel drive units. I was in Jersey fishing this weekend with my 98 Jeep. 8" soft sand, 12 lb air no problems. One of my members had a new full time Jeep. got stuck, had to shovel out. The ABS controlled traction control systems might be OK on the road but leave a lot to be desired on sand.
