I had that same motor since 04 and just sold it. Put about 700 hours on it and it still looked and ran like new without missing a beat.

My advice is to:

ALWAYS change the oil and lower unit oil ahead of schedule. Put a Yamha or racor fuel filter upstream and change every frequently. (keep a spare on board)
Use yamaha's "ring free" gas additive with each fill up. This stuff is beyond good, it is amazing. Your motor will run smoother than it was new. (the first tankful expect to see a lot of blacksh*t come out of the exhaust but follow the directions, it is great) Change out the water pump on a regular basis (it did mine yearly but I used my boat a lot and was in remote spots a lot of the time and didn't want to worry about that going).. and buy good gas, these engines hate poor quality fuel...keep an eye on those filters. I think you will like the motor they are quiet and they run nice and don't burn a lot of gas or smoke at all. Also a lot of guys have parts and good service is available in our area should you need it.

Good luck with it!

I have used it before on my Johnson, works like a charm on any brand.
The new Yamaha is a 4 stroke

LOOKS NICE! You will like it, esp compared to what you had on there. I remember fishing when I first got mine...turned the key only to find out it was already running! nice & quiet, no smoke. It has a nice deep roar to it when you are at cruise. If you don't beat on it, and have it serviced as recommended, it will last a looong time. You should see a couple thousand hours no problem. Regular oil changes and clean fuel is ticket. ( a batch of dirty fuel these days can cause a lot of long lasting problems that takes weeks to fully resolve)

GOOD LUCK with it this season!!

Thanks Sandman,
I am on vacation right now in MS, but before I left I dropped the boat off to have all the service done, I had them do everything!!

He said it would be done when I get hiome (Tomorrow) and if there were any issues he would call my cell phone. Well he has never called so I guess all is fine.

I can do most maintenance myself, but I wanted him to do everything down to Tstas just to be sure all was right before I started the season.

Joe I have an 03 yami 4 stroke and I echo everything that has been said but I want to reinforce the fuel thing. I have never run anything but 89 or 93 (when I can afford it) but never, ever 87. Two different Yami dealers told me that the Yami is a super motor but really want at least 89 Octane gas.

No boat, back in the suds.

I have to finish the rewire job, waiting on a few parts. But motor is all rigged, took it out today in buzzards bay, and all i can say is WOW!!
The motor is so quite that I thought it stalled a few time! It is very responsive and moves like a dream!!
GPS says my top speed is 44 mph which is a hole 12 mph faster then it was before and she now cruises at 5k 32 mph which was my top speed before!

Filled the tank today with 89 and ring free, I almost ready!!

Thanks guys!!
