More questions from the ding dong

1. Round nose pliers...will any pair do, or is there a preferred maker? I saw some in Netcraft for about $20 and as wondering if they're any good.

2. Wire hole diameter...I just ordered a bunch of pre bent wire and would like to know how big a through hole guys typically drill. Is it a one size fits all? I was looking at 1/8" bits to purchase.

3. Metal lips...do you epoxy them in, or does the through wire hold them in place? I have a couple metal lips built by so called "pros" that swim around in the lip slot.

1. Don't use 'em. normal NN work fine for me.

2. I use 5/32. I get almost no misdrilled blanks maybe 1-2 a year, even w/less than sharp bits 1/32 makes big difference in the stiffness of longer bits. Plus I seal w/epoxy and the bit of extra space works out well.

3. I rough them up a bit and epoxy, although sometimes they still work free after being assaulted by rocks.

I still prefer a screw driver in a vise for tail wraps although I have a couple pair of the rounded needle nose pliers.

5/32" bit all the way through for me.

I think all lips will come loose after a while with or without epoxy. Although if you can get a little epoxy in the lip slot before you push in the lip and give it a tight tail wrap it should be fine

1. I use jewelers pliers that i purchased at sears hardware locally for around 8 dollars.

2. I use a 5/32 inch bit that i purchased from shars.com works well for me.

3. I paint my plugs then wire them and then i epoxy everything as the final stage i think this helps keep the lips in place. I have seen others epoxy and then wire them. Try both ways and see which way you like.

1. I use Round nose pliers and I'm a Cheap Bastard if that helps.

2. 5/32 here also for a drill bit

3 I epoxy the plug 1st, put a peice of playing card in the slot so the epoxy doesn't get in there (remember to pull it out before it set) then the lipsget epoxied in place just before I through wire.

If its a plug with no lip then I through wire 1st then epoxy it so it helps to keep the wire on place

You don't want to bother with all that.
Just cut a lip slot, drill an eye hole, then insert your hook in the slot and out the eye and you'll be good to go.

Mike at M&D's has good pliers and often also has drill bits.

1. I ground my own out of a pair of good sized needlenose, only one jaw is round. There is an advantage to that.
2. I use 3/16 from the back and 1/8 from the front
3. Tight wire and a 1/8 hole holds them, then I epoxy after they are wired and that helps too.

I bought a cheap pair of needlenose at Ocean State Job Lot and ground down one side like Pete did. If you screw it up you won't loose much.

5/32 drills work for me.

I epoxy the lips in place and secure them with Environ Teck coating. Sometimes I will insert a small SS wood screw.

2. I don't do thru drilling so no comment.
3. Holes drill thru the part of lip that is in the body and epoxy lets the epoxy act as "pin" to hold the lip in place.

Knipex Round Nose Pliers

What size are you guys using? I have no idea what part they are referencing when they list 125mm, 140mm, etc.. My Crappsman round nose pliers do more to hurt my hands when I wire plugs than anything.

Toby the Knipex pliers are superior to many craft models. You can make loops from 3/16-3/8. Leverage and comfort is a plus when you have oodles to wire. I purchased mine from a supplier in Tenn.
