Driving With The Boy!

Took my oldest out driving today for the first time! It went well! Went to an industrial park and had him drive around and get comfortable with the vehicle for an hour and practiced backing up! Was I nervous?????You better friggin believe I was nervous! But he did just fine...and so did I!

I might have to start drinkng heavily when he starts driving on his own....I am gonna be a wreck! Any advise from you Dad's who have been here already???

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

Send them to driving school. It's worth every cent and will add years to your life. I tried one time to teach them to drive. I was scared silly...

Larry,,Once they get thier license and take your truck out on thier own you just have to pray they drive safely and they come home safely..Ater a while it gets easier and you dont worry as much, but in the mean time try to relax..

Wink

Not to worry, just accept the fact that the first year
will bring dents and dings. Luckily all 3 of mine drove our
one and only car, so i got used to it.

2 side swipes
1 V in the bumper and trunk of a 76 olds when bumpers were bumpers. "Dad I did it backing out of my friends driveway. "
Ya like i was born yesterday.

BigFish,

FWIW, in West Boylston, they have the Central Mass Driver School. They have a "skid" school in the back. Great course! Accident avoidance and all sorts of little "lessons." Had to take it when I ran with the ambulance. They run you off a soft shoulder and teach you how to recover. Pretty decent course to have a kid learn on.

Just an FYI

Luckly for you !
Larry is a lot smarter
He will be fine
Just remind him when he leaves the "Parking" spot
To wipe the condensation of the windows first
So he can see better

I did what you are doing Larry ... Industrial Park .. and they were doing drivers ed .. Practice backing up straight along the curb ,, My driving habits have changed over the years .. I'd probably flunk .. 2 thumbs,,2 feet ,,and all mirrors ..

If he needs 40 hours with a parent, give him 60 or 80. Yeh, it's a pain but just remember how much better you were after a few months of driving -v- a few weeks...

Good luck Larry (and Larry)

I agree, the more time that you put in, the more you will get to know what HIS/HER driving will be like, and you can instill lessons that aren't necessarily covered in drivers ed. Think about the lessons you learned over the years, and think of what they will HAVE to learn on their own

The most important thing I would stress is that when they are behind the wheel, THEY are responsible for whatever they do while driving.
Sure, there are things that will be out of their control, but it's up to them to be in control at all times.
That means NO DRINKING, NO TEXTING/CELL PHONES, NO "MULTI-TASKING" and NO LETTING SOMEONE "BORROW" THE VEHICLE!

I hope they pay attention and become a safe and knowledgeable driver!

Join the parade on my street. The DMV gives the on road driving test in my neighborhood and we must get 50+ practice+test newbies per day. Even Sat/Sun before 8AM.

Remember: seat belts buckled!

Get ready for the larger increase in auto insurance premiums once they get that license!

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.

At 16 1/2 First off, may sure he does not drive with anyone of past his time = the fine is $750 .00
Thats a lot of lures !!!

WHe he turns 17 and if he has a car , you will never see him again , it's like a new world...

O ya, just add him to one of your cars, 800- campared to 1700 if they insure there own car .
