Ever been busted poaching or any other illegal fishing related activity?? I mean crap, dudes have been doing shady chit since Eve ate the apple. Don't worry knowone really cares that much, I least I don't. We've all made mistakes some a lot dumber then others. Yes I've been busted 'in' the herring run about 10 yrs ago . Payed a stiff penalty for doing something stupid and swore never to do it again....and I haven't. Anybody else wanna walk in the light of shame with me or would you rather protect your name?

Poachers should be taken out into the blue water and pushed overboard while tied to a cinderblock-style PFD.

Once, but I outsmarted them
I was poaching lobster at a beach. A game warden, his first day on the job saw him and said:
"I'm going to have to arrest you. Poaching is illegal."
"I'm not poaching lobsters, These are my pets. I'm exercising them. I throw them into the sea, then whistle, and they come back."
"Show me," the warden said in disbelief.
I threw the lobsters into the water and started to walk away.
"Wait!" the warden shouted. "Don't you have to whistle to call your lobsters back?"
I looked at the warden, paused, And said, "What lobsters?"

Did a couple dumb things, long time ago. Find it easier to have fun doing the stuff I want (legally) and not having to worry or be afraid to look in the mirror. Or worse, see myself through my son's eyes if caught cheating.

Back when I was a kid my dad and I were fishing Pleasant Bay. We were getting some herring when a pickup came flying down the road beeping his horn and flashing his lights "Paul Revere" style. Me being a kid, I had no idea what was going on....kinda. Guess my dad did because we tried to get out of Dodge ASAP....didn't quite make it before the trailing police car pulled in front of us. Who'd have thought that "Run Closed" sign applied to a couple of guys trying to get bait. Well the cop looks in the livewell and proceeds to give my dad the business and tells him to put em all back. Everything was going OK until the officer rechecked and noticed that a couple had "accidentally" jumped under the center console and then things got serious. My dad played the "just trying to take the boy fishing" card to perfection and we escaped with a warning. Found out later from "Paul Revere" that the hot setup was to use a little teamwork..one guy as lookout...another tossing a cherry bomb under the bridge and another downstream with a net....Gone in 60 Seconds.
I won't mention the Winnie bass boat vs. marine patrol thing...Who'd have thought that speed limit sign applied to a couple of guys late for weigh-in! ;-)

Digging seaworms on the southside of Moon I. in Quincy [1980].I had a city permit but not a state permit.Came in by boat with a buddy. We were digging about an hour and getting some monster worms.I look up and this guy in green is zig-zaging accross the flat towards us.Then I notice the flash of a badge on his chest.I tell my friend it's ok I've got a permit. We continue digging as he gets closer. He's screaming like a madman at us so we stop and wait for him.We go round and round and he's fuming.I'm supposd to have a state contaminated digging permit."The city didn't tell me" when I got the permit.Anyway we have to drop the worms and he's going to impound the boat and gear.We go round and round again. As we're arguing I notice the tide is starting to come in.I don't say anything and start to apologize for yelling back and he eases up and says you be recieving citataions in the mail [boat reg #'s to appear in court].We push the boat off the flat and back off.He turns around to go back to Moon I.The tide came in behind him and he's got lowcut leather boots on.Now he looks back at us and we just wave bye-bye.He had to walk through some spots up to his knees and you could hear him most of the way back.About a month later I get a bunch of citations in the mail with the wrong spelling of my name and reg# of the boat.I never appeared in court and never heard about it again.I'll never forget his face when he turned around and looked at us as we waved bye-bye!!!!! .

I'm guessing many people that have replied only fish recreationally. Add money into the mix, and you have the reason why a lot of people don't trust commercial fishermen to be honest.

Then says we can fish for another hour while he goes and gets the guys on the other side of the cove, tells us to meet him at our vehicles cuz he is parked there. Gave us a warning and I havent been back since. But MAN, there are some bigguns in there.

If it's where I think it is, there are monsters there. Plus with all the pine blight they have been clearing it out and it's wide open now.

I was like 17 or 18(1987 or 88 just for reference) and was dipping herring up behind the herring run motel. The property owner at the time had "conveniently" left the gate open for fishermen. After observing for a few days I realized it was pretty common for guys to walk right in through the unlocked gate and dip bait, so why would I needlessly deprive myself from having some live bait?
Anyways, the squirrel cop/herring warden showed up while I was dipping, confiscated my stuff and left me with a $50 fine.
What got my goat was this same guy used to "discreetly" deliver live bait to all his buddies on the canal. There would be a couple guys set up down in the cribbin area, the green truck would pull up(while nobody was looking, of course), and load the guys up with bait. The whole canal herring scene back then was really something to behold.
Participating in that fishery with any fervor was like being a member of the underworld...many folks would point the finger at everyone else, all the while they'd be hoarding every last piece of bait for themselves when nobody was looking, or at least they thought.

It's not the bait

Every year except for last I usually get busted once or twice. I don't really freshwater fish much but when I do I fish an illegal spot. We dress in full camo and even sport war paint. The last time we got busted we forgot the war paint and they saw our faces. They get a kick out of catching us because we make it very hard for them to find us. The fishing is well worth the ticket or 2 a year. And the guys who bust us have always been pretty cool about it. They always say You know your not supposed to be here right? Yep but the fishing is too good not to.
