DVR data storage

Has anyone out there copied shows from their DVR to either a hard drive or DVD? I am not a computer expert but would assume this would be fairly simple. My wife thinks the DVR is for quick watch and delete, and is angry I have so much classic stuff on there. Yes I am a packrat to some extent but woodsmith shop is a great show and so are some of the other how to type things I have recorded. I tried googling but couldn't find anything that was straightforward.
Thanks in advance

I have saved fron DVR to DVD using a DVD recorder. You can get one for under $100, for example:

Amazon.com: Toshiba DR420 DVD Recorder, Black: Televisions & Video

I used one that also has a VCR so can tape to DVD or tape but of course I used DVD. Fairly simple to hook up.

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.

Tivo has a thing where you can back up your shows to a hard drive on your computer, then it recognizes the computer drive and you can recall them. The transfer process is slow though. I had Cox and their boxes had usb ports to hook up additional drives, but they were not activated.

prior to retirement, I copied all the shows I had save to my windows media center and then copied them to dvd, very slow and painful.
