I caught my first fish a my fly rod!!!!!!

i was so excited, today i was in a local pond trout fishing with one of my friends and i brought along my brand new fly rod (i got it for x-mas but havent used it yet), so we were fishing this little cove for a while with our spinning outfits but they werent bightin the powerbait so i let it ouf there took off my shoes put the water shoes on and wadedd up to my knees so i was just doing a little fly fishing (this is the first time i have ever used this fly rod or any fly rod for that case) i had on a little blue fly that i was flinging over towards the lillys and was workin it back to me then throughing it out agian, on my 3rd swing back .... strip.. strip..see the line go out..bang got my first sunfish,i continued catching a couple of these (i know they are small but hey i am a beginner to fly fishing and it was exciting) and then ended the day with a fair sized pickeral. well i had my fun. so later on i went to wal mart and got some new flys, some poppers and wooly buggers. One question, are the flys supposed to unwind at all, because after my 2nd fish it started coming apart a little, i dont know if they are bad quality(since they did come with the outfit) or if they came apart when i got them out with my needlenoses, or what. Whats with this fly???

No, a good fly should not unwind. Go to a fly fishing shop and buy your flies. you will not get good quality flies at Walmart. Needlenose pliers are tough on flies, try hemostats (sp?). Only needlenose on big saltwater flies. Now you have the disease, you will not be able to get it out of your blood for the rest of your life.

Get a little glue and try sealing your fly back up again. At least you know it catches fish! good job.

Stripers on a flyrod are fun and I toyed with it years ago on a 8 weight freshwater bass rod. I got older and my bad joints got tired and I gave that up. I used to love catching big smallmouth bass on a flyrod, what a kick*ss way to catch them.

Congrats. Flyfishing is a blast. Don't worry about the size of the fish you are catching. Some guys target bluegills exclusively and the big ones can really put a tug on light gear.

thanks everyone for the congrats. i forgot one little thing that i experienced that was so cool on my day fishing the other day. ok well when i was wading out a little, i looked over and i saw this little horse fly in the water then i see, bubble...bubble...bubble... BAM the horse fly was gone, i toss my fly over, and BAM huge sunfish. i thought that that was really cool. BTW I have a 6 weight 8 foot fly rod. well i dont really know wear any flyfishing stores are so i am kinda stuck with the wal mart flys. will these be ok? will they catch fish?

They'll catch fish under some conditions , same as all flies. You may want to put some head cement on them before you start. Easier to prevent them from unraveling in the first place than it is to repair them afterwards. You should look into tying your own. I tied flies for years using a drill to hold the hook. I did buy a cheap bobbin and I used my mother's sewing thread. Look online for other sources of flies too. If there is no "flyfishing" shop near you , look at the regular tackle shops. Murats is an all around shop but he has lots of flies and tying equipment. Most tackle shops carry some flies.

what is head cement ??? what would i need to get into fly tying? materials?? equiptment??
