Buzzards Bay - fall - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

The fall usually sucks for me in Narr Bay. Lousy weather usually limits my trips to Narr and Newport and the bass fishing never really picks up in the bay. I have been venturing to the canal more and more each year and I am starting to get familiar with the area, its only 45 mins from my house. rather than take to the shore ( I am a lazy boat guy now) I was thinking of pullling my boat around labor day and trailering the boat and hitting buzzards bay, heading off the fish as they pass through the canal. Do any of you guys fish that area?
I was wondering what the fishing is like? Is there a lot of topwater action? Is it mobbed with other boats? Is BB realatively calm? Nice place to fish from a boat? I really have no idea, but was thinking it would be an option. Any thoughts, ideas, warnings are greatly appreciated. I havent done any research yet, this is my first stab

Trailering is definitely the thing to do in the fall. We're gonna be pulling the boat in the next couple days and start trailering for the rest of the year. I'm not sure how Buzzards Bay gets in the fall, but you should consider CC Bay. Check your pm's.

Jimmy,do you ever take the boat outside the bay?Some very good fishing out front in the fall not to mention right now.NPT to WPT that is a fine stretch of water.

best thing i ever did was take it off a slip and leave it on the trailer.

Yes, I do. Most of my fishing is not what most consider the bay. I fish a lot along Narrangasett, Jtown and Newport. I'm just not into the daytime, deep water fishing. Im still stuck in surfcaster mode where I toss eels along the rocks. After spring, I prefer nights and Im not too comfortable fishing going out along the reefs at night. Its a learning curve. I was hoping for some "fall run" type behavior and I havent gotten into that in awhile

is [not] your typical bay ............. don,t think like Narragansett bay .......... think like in front ><<>not all the time .................................... But a night ride back from Cutty with the wind against the tide will keep you more than awake ><><>

i have some experience fishing buzz bay. its not like our bay or even the area just outside that you are used to. The best fishing areas seem to be around the islands, especially the holes. I have been in some of the most nail biting situation coming through those holes when wind v. tide. Nasty ugly 6-8ft sh-t. And the bay in general gets pretty riled up just about every afternoon. It does usually settle at sundown, it seems.

Personally I moved my boat to galilee area and have been fishing outside from PJ to WH to BI and have been having a great summer. Nothing huge, but plenty of bass to 25 lbs and I have plenty of eating fish (fluke & black sea bass) to last the week to boot. And that is daytime (5AM- Noon) only fishing. I am dreaming about the days when my kids will be old enough that I can start going out at night again...

but i know that is even crazier drive for you than wickford...

I can't comment on boat fishing the canal.

Jim, you should still consider putting it on the trailer. If we get our boat off the mooring and onto the trailer in the next couple of weeks, I'll get you out to the spots I mentioned to you yesterday. That may help you make up your mind.

I personally hate trailering.

I took my boat off the slip in wickford two years ago. Last summer was a wash because I had a 1 year old at home, so I didn't get to do much. Mainly, this was because I was tired. The thought of trailering down, possibly waiting in line, rushing the boat off the trailer, dealing with morons, getting the boat settled, truck parked, and then off to fish, then when done fishing, do all in reverse, sucked. It was an extra 1/2 hour on either side of fishing that limited my trips. Add to that you are almost always looking for someone to go with you to lend a hand, not always a complete necessity, but it helps bigtime. Also, once you have the trailer on the truck , you have the trailer on the truck. You aren't going to go anywhere but home after you fish...

Now this season I started off the same, trailering to wickford, dealing with the BS, making excuses not to go. I had been going to the beach with the fam in the PJ area, and so I started looking for a slip down there. I made a trip in June to block, and realized how close it was (although we got socked in with fog) and really made the push to get a slip down there. Now that I am down there and on a slip, I have been going out 2+ times per week. Easy, just park car, throw some gear & ice on boat and head out. I am still learning a lot, but have started to have some good success. I will take you out down there.. it is a lot of fun.

Obviously, main downfall is that you are somewhat "stuck" in the area around your slip, but the fishing is only getting better down there from now through Oct.....

Been out of Green Harbor, Ryder's Cove,Pamet,Sandwich Marina,Point Judith just to name a few.Not sure my suburban is happy but I haven't felt this is much of a problem.If Buzzards Bay had been more generous this would not have been necessary but it sure beats NOT fishing.I can't imagine getting a slip next year unless my dream of a beach house is realized.The ramp thing is entertainment but if you have your own act together it really is not an issue.Back down, dismount, park vehicle and fish.Bunker trailer is easier than roller for me.

i go out of the west end all the time,STAY AWAY,just kidding,there's room if you know how to drive your boat,from the maritime to just past onset it gets a little bumpy or a lotta bumpy,tides, big jackass yatchs, not a place for a small boat at times,i have a 21ft grady w/a sometimes i hold on tight,but the fishing can be pretty good
