$4-5 Gas - How will this affect how you fish?

On the doorstep of $4 gas which could easily go to $5. What are you going to do to change up? Will you change anything up? $1 per gallon ads $2000+ for me per year.

I'd like to get some suggestions, yes, some are obvious, on how to switch it up. Without getting all political - that belongs in a different forum here

• Fish more with friends (which means fishing less tides I like).
• Considering a fuel efficient car for most of my driving including non-beach fishing. A fuel sipping wagon.
• Fishing more local.
• Getting two tides on a trip when more than 50 miles from home.

What other suggestions / other ways to change things up are?

I'm starting to seriously look for something that gets better mileage than my truck or jeep. And like you mentioned, start staying for two tides. Guess I'll have to take the back seat and wall out so I can crash in it........ all my rods are one piece too....... how do you suppose a rod rack will fit on a Prius?

You might see me riding my canal bike on Rt 195. Carpooling is tough. I like to fish and not worry about leaving. This year is def gonna suck as far as gas if you drive a truck.

It already has, i didnt make an early season trip yet this year. I will be making the trips i do take longer. Instead of making trips down after work for a few hours every week i will save them for the weekends, when i can stay until sunday. Im going to be gettin extra cozy in the back of my jeep this year. I did consider getting a wagon but i need the 4 wheel drive and its just not economical to me to get another vehicle.

we are dumping my wifes pathfinder and getting a nissan versa. next year i hope to get a 4x4, 4 cyl toyo pickup and leave the f250 in the driveway alot. more fishpooling - by truck or boat. and definately fishing more local spots

Still gonna fish as I always have! Life is short so I do not plan on cheating myself! I live close to great fishing both fresh and salt and will fish surf and from my kayak! Trips to the canal will use most of my fuel but all in all its worth it!! Nothing changing here!

definitely going to affect me. I probably will only fish the salt a handful of times before memorial day. Once the topwater bite really gets going I'll probably go more. But until then I'll be concentrating on freshwater. Have a spot where big fish stack up to spawn and will readily take an artificial. Only 10 min down the road. that's where you'll find me for the next month...

i can only go when its raining or over cast (typically)
although i'd like a more economical vehicle on gas
this one is gonna have to do...

its comfortable to NAP in (very important)

two tides -> for one trip < definitely

I like your attitude. If you break off one lure that costs you more than the gas.

I hear that! Not going to affect my fishing at all. I just won't take my girl out for diner as much. Fishing season is too short to deprive myself due to gas prices

Winter is a long wait also to get where we want to be! Buddying up is a great way to go if possible! To my kayak buddies I can always squeeze another yak on my truck if need be?

I was thinking of putting a rod rack on top of my 84 vanagon.. Can hold six people and alot of gear.. Start a fi fish taxi service.... 6 people within a 30 mile radius $10 a head for two tides..

Hard part for me is mines paid off. to get a more efficient buggy i then add a payment that I don't have.I've already cut my cape trips by well more than half and Rhody well only made 4 last yr. I do sleep in my buggy way more than I used to. The boat well didn't use it lat yr might not this yr. 2 kayaks work good.

ya its gonna be rough....i live 1hr 20min from my favorite fishing and pulling the boat with my tundra....gulp! but considering i just dropped 12k on a new motor i plan to use it! i'll be taking more buddys with me to chip in on fuel.

Filled up for $100 yesterday! Figure thats $400 month just for the usual driving.....add the assorted trips fishing every week......I bet gas will be about $650 month??? Car payment pales in comparison to keeping the damn thing fueled up!!!

I'll probably spend $1500 on gas to go fishing in saltwater if it gets to 5 bucks, but sleeping in my truck at a campground is cheaper than a motel. Maybe expensive gas will keep the yahoos from running their generators while I'm trying to sleep. Though the St Croix mojo I want is gas for a couple of trips.

Driving the speed limit has already helped, 60 or 65 on the highway, makes for a slower trip but the mileage is a lot better.

Besides the trips to the ditch most if my spots are pretty close about 15 to 25 miles from the house, so not to crazy.

I work too hard and too long not to go when I can.

I will plan a bit more and make sure the tides are key.

Fish smarter not harder.

I dumped my Ford f 150 super crew last season and got a 4 cylinder Mazda tribute. I love that little suv.

Gets about 32 highway and 25 city, a little slow getting up to speed but gets it done.

Johnny that car has been good to you, and it's seen it's share of use, keep it until it catches fire or seizes to function.

Maybe this is a way of paying extra not to fish with yahoos...then again they may need to fish more to feed there family because alot of people are paying just to go to work

Yah, I got a sweet deal on a 32 Slampage (Rampage) with dual 440 Chryslers. It will probably burn about 60-70 Gph stuffed in the corner. I figure its not that bad concidering I fish less than 30 miles out. A chance to move up in boats without taking out a loan. And when the time comes ill throw a set of diesels in it.

Gas is 4.55 here now on the street. At the marina it has got to be 5 bucks+.

I don't drive anywhere in my car so the cost is not that painful (< $100/mo) . But I burn about 3000 gals/year of diesel in my boat so do the math... it sucks. ( I only burn 10-11/gals per hour...twin 440's...is a dinosaur,you good luck trying to sell that. that is a $350/hour fuel burn, ouch. 85 hours of running those gas engines will pay for a new diesel.)

In answer to your original question...I will cut back as much as 50% of my boat use, after that, I am heading to the golf course and will fish the beach locally. This is rediculus. There is no supply problem!
