House paining? - Wagner power painter or Brush

I just finished power washing and scraping my house that was last painted 8 years ago, and am debating whether to use a power painter or by brush again.

Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of the quality (look) and durability of paint when using a power painter.

It was last painted with latex, which I think means it's got to be latex again.

What type of siding is it? How many layers of old paint? Post a picture of a spot or side of the house if possible.
Wagner power painter is a toy. Either use a brush, small roller, professional sprayer or a combo of these.

Thanks for the feedback Slingah, here's what I've got.

The house was built in '64, shingles have little to no spaces between them. I'd guess 6 coats in it's life.

Not a pro painter but I'd think a brush would give a more protection. Even if it's sprayed you might end up back brushing a lot of it anyway.

To me it looks as if you still have some prep to go....hard to see from photos though. Here is what I would do. Start to finish.
1. Wash house with bleach/ detergent. Apply with pump sprayer, rinse low pressure with pressure washer. Let dry.
2. Scrape peeling paint.
3. Sand any high edges flush.
4. Dust off substrates.
5. Prime with a bonding primer like XIM.
6. Finish with 2 coats high quality waterborne paint like Benjamin Moore.

When I paint shingles I use a 4-6 " wizz roller. I can fly with one and end result is always great. Brush trim.

I think you're right spence, but with the week long monsoon ahead of us, it's a good time to get thoughts on all options.

I love those little rollers. Never done shingles with one but I could see it working well.

Also Simple Green and a soft scrub brush on an extension pole will get aluminum gutters bright and clean again.

I use a paint can with the rim removed and a small screen. I also like the longer roller arm. Way faster than a brush.

good stuff right there.. if you don't do the prep, don't bother with the paint....and prep should take longer than painting.. and please.. let it dry good, before applying product..

I have used both a Power Painter twice and a Pro type Sprayer once. In all cases I sprayed the paint on and then brushed over every inch. Its much faster than brush alone as you do not have to keep going back to the can to wet the brush. They Power Painter worked just as well as the pro model after overbrushing. The pro model was easier cause it took the whole gallon can of paint at once. The Power Painter you had to fill one quart at a time. I bought the Power Painter but borrowed the pro sprayer. The pro sprayers are expensive. You need to get a special nozzle for the Power Painter. I belive you use the biggest they sell for latex paint. You may also have to thin it but I suppose that depends on the exact paint and nozzle etc. I remember thinning it the first time I did it but did not have to the second time as Wagner had come out with the bigger nozzle byu then.

Anyway , even with the pro sprayer stay several inches away from the windows , etc or you will get overspray all over the place. I think I painted my whole house in 1 day with the sprayer and it used to take 4 days using brush alone. I have cedar shingles so you spray it all over , especially under the shingles , then I brush horizontal under the shingle lips and then 100% I brush vertically to finish it. You will have excess paint on the shingles so as the brush takes the excess off you just brush it on to an unsprayed area.

Last tip is to go back after 5 minutes or so to catch any drips, them if needed , again 5 minutes later. Sounds like a lot of work but you are covering the area almost 5 times faster so its definitely worth using the sprayer.

Oh , BTW , I agree with the part about the prep. I painted my house in a day but it took me two weeks to scrap , sand, wash and prime all bare scraped areas before I started painting. And I did two coats of final painting so 1 Day per coat to paint.

Matt, I have a front porch 36x12 area which I took down
to bare wood by hand 30 years ago and have since put 3 coats of polyurethane
over the years sanding between each coat the last coat applied with the whizz foam roller. It is in excellent shape with no peeling just needs freshening.

Karl is right about prep, but after all the cleaning and scrubbing do you think i can get away without sanding by using " liguid sander" as a last step?
My back won't take sanding anymore.

I had that drilled into me as a kid as my Dad was a house painter.

" Brush it in boy, brush it in, go from unpainted into painted."
Can still hear him saying it everytime I paint.

Hi Dave! My limited knowledge on Liquid Sander is that you need to apply whatever it is that you are using directly after you apply the Liquid Sander....it has an "open time" I have always thought of it as being used for a small item.
If sheen is dulled you might not have to sand much at all....but as you know....shortcuts usually don't cut the mustard....

Spraying is fine if prepped and primed correctly....the TOP coat is not penetrating anything.....I still like to bush or roll though, spraying exteriors can be a headache. It all depends on the situation.

All done (well a few touch up spots). The weather god were very kind this memorial day weekend.

I rented an airless sprayer from home depot and though the prep work (covering for overspray) was greater than I expected, once I got going, I got 2 coats on 2 1/2 sides in 4 hrs. I wish I taped a tarp to the house to cover the chimney, but wasn't thinking , with a brush alone that side took longer than the rest of the house.

All in all I used 7 gallons of paint, now maybe, just maybe I'll get to see my fishing stuff again.
