Unfortunately the stuff that makes people commit robbery is everywhere. The places where you would least expect it are where you should keep your guard up the most. I couldnt tell you how many cars have been broken into in my neighborhood, stuff stolen from yards etc. Keep in mind these people arent the ones struggling because of a tough economy, they are drug addicted low life. Our hard work and nice gear is only another fix for them. There is safety in numbers fish with friends if you can. If these jackwagons are carrying weapons ,nothing is worth a shot at your life. The thought of blinding them with my led light and introducing them to my dive knife sounds great sitting behind a desk but in reality I dont know how I would react.

It amazes me how in the world someone can criticise this as a wasted thread. We are all trying to help one another out here. If it happened to you"FISHING FOOL" or a friend of yours you might feel a little different. NO ONE wants to get mugged or beaten up and one or two times is too many. Save your criticism please for something constructive and give us all a break

I'm a quincy resident. If you're fishing anywhere near Father Bill's homeless shelter, you're asking for trouble. I also would be very careful fishing at night at Chappel rock. It's very secluded and the it seems that East Boston's finest have seemed to claim it as their territory.

As I said before I carry my .38 when I'm fishing the back river in Weymouth as much for the coyotes as the rabid heroin zombies.

The last thing you need walking back to your car in the pitch black is a rabid coyote.

Hey settle down. 4 people have asked for specific location and no one can provide them! What that tells me is that this is not factually based. "Give us all a break"? What are you talking about????
Try and make sense (facts)!

PS: I wouldnt loose my things I'd be filling out paper work for the dead guy who tried to rob me!

and hopefully not behind bars for killing some lowlife who wanted your fishing pole.

they do happen... I'm pretty sure it was westport last year where someone had rocks thrown at them and a 75yr old fisherman was robbed by this guy,

Licino Fernandes Lopes, 22, was charged with armed robbery, assault and battery on an elderly person, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, larceny of more than $250 and intimidating a witness. Two others, one a 16-year-old, are expected to be charged with the same crimes. Four others could be charged with disturbing the peace, said police spokesman Detective Jeff Majewski.

Scum bags....

It happens guys so be aware of your surroundings! And you damn well not pull out you gun if you aren't fully prepared to use it and seriously feel like your life is being threatened.

I wonder if it makes any off you gold VS owners make you wish you went with black.

I suspect if you shoot someone trying to rob you, you'll probably get off, but it will cost you 10's of thousands of dollars and wreck several years of your life.

I don't know this for a fact, but I'd guess if you use deadly force to protect yourself outside your home you will put yourself in a position where you need to justify it in court. That is not likely to be easy or cheap.

Blowing the head off some 18 yo kid who wants your wallet to feed his Percocet habit is probably frowned upon once tempers have cooled. Better to give him your rod and go steal Paul's.

I used to fish some very sketchy places, but dont even bother anymore due to the losers that hung out in those areas. I got in the habit of never using the headlamp within visual distance of the truck, that way, you can see if anyone is in the surrounding area (canal is tougher with the lights, but doable). Dome light was always shut off in the truck and parked in a darker area so no one can easily see car lights and you. I got good at getting in the car and driving away fast too! The way I look at it, your eyes are adjusted to the night, and you can see someone around or coming at you. Best defense is to avoid the conflict to begin with. When someone is close to you, thats when they could knife or shot you easily...

I've had some very sketchy people approach me and some buddies, - the key was being aware that they were approaching. A 60 pound boga and dive knife out in view is pretty threatening, but if youre off into the darkness its just as tough for them to figure out whats going on and leaves them more uncomfortable than you!

I'm thinking if I'm in waders and in the water and some guy is throwing rocks at me, he is indeed threatening my life. I'm not going to go deeper into the water(for obvious reasons) to get out of range and am certainly not going to get any closer to him for fear his aim may get better.

what would you do? I'm thinking I can cast a bucktail farther than he can throw a rock (shut up vic!).... But then again he was out numbered.. Maybe one 3oz smiling bill to the noggin would even the odds a little more

A reasonable argument, but once you shoot him it is not going to matter one bit what you thought, it is going to matter what the DA and a jury think, and that is probably going to cost you and your family a real lot of money and angst. Count on it.

Couple years ago at a sketchy spot I had a bunch of guys come up on me so I held my flash light in there faces like a cop and said, "Can I assist you gentleman" Loudly. They left quickly with out incident, but if they didn't, i was way out numbered.

I didn't mean to start a mid-season chitstorm about locations of vehicle
B & E's. I park in out-of-the-way places along the ditch, and just wanted to have a heads up about anything going on. Some guy stopped at 12:30 a.m. last week and ask how I was doing. I didn't know him I don't think. Thought it was strange. I didn't really return his discourse and he road off.

Frank, if it was last Tues., I think I rode past you around that time, but I didn't stop or say anything because I wasn't sure if it was you or not.

I have been following this thread and it is extremely disturbing. I fish at night and it's a long walk down the boardwalk at night. I make the trip several times a night sometimes (alone) to go to my rig in the parking lot. My biggest fear so far has been running into a coyote or a skunk. I have thought many times about pepper spray.
I never really thought anyone would want to bother a fisherman. I rarely have anything except my gear with me.
A few years ago there was an attempted rape, during the day in a secluded area of the Refuge. Since then I always make sure I have my knife on my belt and carry the walkie with me. What do I need in order to purchase pepper spray or mace?
I really think this puts a damper on the whole fishing experience and it sad that we have to even think about these things.

Arrow find yourself a nice round rock

about the size of a small egg
put it in a sock...it should be tied tight @ the rock
have the sock hanging out your back pocket

now ya have a little thumper easy to grab
that looks like a rag
only use it where deadly force is warranted.

for coyotes you just HISS like a snake, they go quick
skunks you stand still or back up and or waitem out.

Nothing for pepper spray, LTC for mace.

Fishing is supposed to be fun
it's a shame some of the places and times we choose to fish has to be like this. I guess there are bad apples everywhere.
I have pepper spray at home but never felt I needed to bring it fishing with me, maybe I should. there was a bear spotted on the southcoast so ........
