Why do the "birders" have no sense of humor?

A friend of mine has a son who has been diagnosed with cancer (leukemia). A local (Wellfleet) restaurant had a fund raiser for him and to promote it they had a "Piping Plover Festival" and pretended to serve Cornish Game hens as "plovers."

Well, some people can't take a joke and fail to understand that the constant beach closures due to the piping plovers has resulted in people having a certain "gallows humor" about it.

See this article from the Provincetown Banner:

Plover gimmick backfires at BBQ joint - - Wicked Local Provincetown

This is why you can't reason with these people, they're so caught up in their own little worlds that they just can't see over the top of the box they've built for themselves.

Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

As momma used to say,

EFFEM IF THEY CAN'T TAKE A JOKE!

I am all for preserving endangered wildlife, but things have been driven way too far by the self impressed self righteous bent on excluding others from 'their' resource.

Plovers may taste like chicken, or game hen!, but psycho-birders are a most unsavory lot.

"Plover gimmick backfires"

Doubtful. I'd bet the "500 Wellfleet residents" that volunteer and will never go there again are far outweighed by the locals who recognize the massive financial hit the birds have caused, not to mention the droves of tourists that smell that delicious smoke up to a mile down Rt. 6.

What really needs to happen is that fishermen should start becoming members and volunteering with the Audubon. Move up through the ranks and start changing the demographic there to one of reason. They can't be beat, so you might as well join them and sabotage the mentality from within.

Maybe the misses and I will have to swing down there to check it out this weekend.

Those folks should have a plover shoved where the sun doesn't shine. Only question would be who removes the stick to make room for the plover.

I suppose they're as passionate about protecting what they believe in as we are about the marine ecology. Just sucks that the plover is nothing more than winged rat, there to support the fox population and provides no sport for their supporters - other than the satisfaction of controlling something.

I like the idea if infiltrating their group but not sure I could get used to the idea of wearing a belt with whales on it and those lime green pants.

My friends, they are correct.

Herein lies the problem...piping plover does not taste anything like chicken. It tastes somewhere between a whopping crane and and a bald eagle.

I love Russ & Marie's Marconi BBQ, I'll go there more now.

Selfishly, I am thrilled if 500 less 'fleetian will be going to Russ & Marie's. That place kicks ass and the less crowds the better for me.

i've been thinking

I know a fair amount about Corvids (crows and ravens) behavoir
and if they are the ones eating plover eggs then the biggest deterent to prevent them from doing just that....is the presense
of humans on the beaches at all hours.. This would also apply to other predators such as coyotes and foxes and the occasional racoon and weasel but not rats. So by banning fishermen from the beaches they have increased predation.... not the reverse.

They hate you.

The problem with those morons is that no matter how many times you show them how the plovers are netted in argentina to be sold to restraunts they don't listen,I sometimes think they just want to close the beaches to show how much control they can have over us. It really has nothing to do with the birds .If it did they'd be screaming bloody murder about the netting that goes on in So. america.National Geographic ran quite the article about it and showed all the tagging leg bands that were sent in to National Wildlife for the rewards that came from down there. They set up nets on the sand bars then drive the birds into them.Break their necks then sell them to the restraunts.By the basket load.

Most vegans are of the opinion that the eating of animals is
unecessary in todays modern age..... with man made protein
from sources such as soybeans ect., or whey which doesn't kill the cow that supplied the milk....

But what they are totally over looking is.... that plants are not only more intelligent than most animals (via evolutionary changes) they are most definitely just as alive. They may not be warm and cuddly with fur you could pet or have the same mode of transportation as walking animals do
but killing one to eat it is absolutely no different. You are taking life to sustain life ....plain and simple.

Not to completely derail the thread...

As a doctor-ordered vegetarian for 9 years (who eats fish against doc's orders), most "man-made" proteins are inferior to good ol' beef and chicken. Most don't contain all the necessary amino-acids needed and some (specifically soy-based proteins and soy milk) have properties that emulate estrogen-type hormones.

Anyway, today's Earthy-Crunchies are our present day Peace and Love hippies. Ignorance to the wider effect of their actions and 'movements' is bliss for them because they can justify a "good cause" by refusing to accept any resulting harm.

What I don't get with the whole plover thing is this.... Plovers are stupid - plain and simple. They nest in areas poorly protected from predators, highly vulnerable to wash out from storms, are extremely territorial and will refuse to nest in close proximity to another nest and are extremely fragile. Quite frankly, they are weak, stupid and kind of deserve to go the way of the dodo.

By putting enclosures up around the nests, the environmentalists are further encouraging this terrible nesting behavior, while also creating a landmark for crows and other predators to target for an easy meal. There is no evolutionary training to get the birds further into the dunes where they'll be better protected because humans minimize the threat.

Also, where can I get one of those t-shirts??

well the older ya get the more signifigant fiber becomes....(later)

"
not yet there isn't

BTW:
i found maniacs post to be most interesting as to why can these birds NOT be imported....somebody tell me the answer

if you can eat them friggan somewhere they can be BOUGHT

signifigant numbers would represent a restored ecology and all sanctions removed ...would seem to be the "logic"..... long live Commander "Spock" " Live long and prosper"
---------------------------------------------------------------------
re: crunchies-Lol granola terrorists hahahahah

as an old associate once said........ god unrest his soul

"haven a good Sh1t is better than good sex
at my age...."
---------------------------------------------------------------------- when we raised Peacocks the trick was to enclose
a whole nesting tree in chicken wire to eliminate coyote predation
----------------------------------------------------------------------
something similar could be designed on a much smaller scale that would allow
for the coming and going of plovers but not predators...
and it can't be this stupid A$$ lil fence that is 100% useless
and like you said an obvious dinner bell visual aid for corvids
the smartest bird on earth

They are hypocritical self-absorbed losers that will go to any length to further a worthless, hopeless cause because their own lives are probably worthless and hopeless!
They probably have all this free time because thy don't work, their kids have disowned them and they sustain themselves by "dumpster-diving" at night in the same establishement's refuse that they chastise in the daylight.

These looney-toon lefty-nut jobs probably didn't see the sign indicating there was a charity because their pea-brains are wired to IGNORE ANYTHING THAT WOULD REQUIRE THEM TO ACTUALLY "GIVE" MONEY!!!! Oh, they'll suck up every penny from the "government-grant" trough, but for them to give money, you better have a gun in your hand!!!

I'll have to make it a point to stop by next time I'm down that way!
I'd love a "BBQ pulled-plover" sandwich!!!
