Broken lami custom rod - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Was out last night with toaster throwing riggies and eel bobs when my rod decided to explode right near my head, sounded like a gun shot!

the rod broke about 3" below the ferrule, which Ive never seen, Ive had one other rod break on me, around the top section between the 3rd or 4th guide.

the riggies where well within the weight range for the rod.

anyone know what the waranty is from lami on a blank?

I looked on there website and called customer service and just waiting to hear back, but my luck with customer service lately has been less than adequete.

thinking that from wetsuit fishing and swimming with rod maybe it got nicked or something or had a small stress facture. Luckily I landed one nice high teen fish before it exploded, then sat on the rocks and watched toaster land some nice fish, I played fish wrangler for him.

The rod has served me well and caught a lot of fish and sees a lot of hard abuse.

The builder has since moved well out of the state of RI and is next to impossible to contact.

it was bound to happen in a matter of time with the amount of use and abuse it sees.

Bummer but grabbing a new surf stick tomorrow

the ferrule area absorbs more energy then a one piece blank. Micro stress cracks may have been a contributing factor that developed over time causing a failure.
If course design is a factor where one manufactures two pieces are better then others.
An analogy would be a large standing wave in deep water coming towards shore then suddenly breaking due to a shallow bottom. The energy of the crashing wave is focused on that area like that of the ferrule as oppose to the wave gliding in as in a one piece rod.

Had a lami blow up on me a few years back . They asked that I cut the rod where the break was and send those 2 pieces in . Got a new blank . Maybe had to pay some shipping , I forget....

Sorry to hear that Chef.

It would be interesting to take a poll of those who broke rods on whether they were using braided or mono line. Seems to me back in the days of only mono this was a very rare event. I know the freshwater largemouth contingent noticed a marked increase in broken sticks when braids became popular. There has to be something to this theory.

Im tempted to spool up with mono again for a few outing just to see how i like it. Its been forever since ive used the stuff. I think my hook up ration would drop but when i did manage to hook up i think i would land more fish. Lots of pulled hooks, especially with plugs in moving water. On the same train of thought with broken rods and braid, i know there is a correlation to bent hooks and braid. I think those tinned mustads that came on so many plugs would be fine using mono. Add braid to the equation and anything over about 32" is bending the hell out of em.

if your drag is set correctly, letting the fish take line and reducing the stress on the rod, wouldnt it solve the issue? Its simply more pressure on the rod thats making it break, no? sure mono has more stretch reducing the stress on the rod compared to braid during the same drag setting. maybe just adjust for it....

fyi i snapped a st criox last summer on a jetty candy caning a 25#, lol

Used braid for about 2 days . Love my 20lb mono! Been using 15lb on the yak!

Blew my Lami up 2 years ago. Was using braid. Wickford rod work rebuilt the rod for me. Cost me like $90.

BROCK 3 LAMI'S 1 GSB AND 2 ARRA'S GOT EVERYONE REPLACED.CMS IS GREAT FOR THAT REASON ALONE.

Lami has had some problems with the 2 peice blanks since the started to look at off shoe production. the Arra 1084 was a big one for it. I've been contacted no less than 6 times in 2 yrs for broken rod info as far as warrentees go with Lami. be very carefull how you word things and don't be supprised if they won't honor it. Several rod builders won't use Lami products anymore due to it.
