Dad went down...hard! Warning - Not for weak stomachs!
We had just got to the canal at 0530. Biked to our spot. Matt and I stopped and began drinking our coffee. Dad stopped and next thing we heard was CRASH! He tried to put his foot down but didn't see the hole and his foot never caught. He went down onto the rocks.
We rushed over and he was responsive. Checked him out and saw the gash. He never got a good look at it but we did. Grabbed a towel and wrapped it. Rest of him was fine...fortunately. He insisted it was a scratch and suggested maybe a butterfly stitch. Yeah right!!
He wanted to relax a bit and watch the sunrise. Gave him a half hour and then saddled up to Tobey Hospital.
Unwrapped it and he finally saw the gash and missing skin.
Final tally was 5 stitches. Gear didn't look bad considering the fall but we will find out eventually.
Out of commission for 10 days at least. Very fortunate nothing more serious happened!
Be careful out there, guys. The canal is very unforgiving. Fared very well for a 68 year old salt! Glad nothing else....like his head, hip, back, ribs etc. hit that hard!

Wow from that pic I would have thought a lot more than 5 stitches to properly close that.
Glad he's ok.

Damn, glad he's alright. Very fortunate. I'm sure we've all seen some heads cracked open down there. Best wishes on a swift recovery.

glad it wasnt worse!
must be something in the air, was at menemsha today with my little one, and as we got out of the truck, someone is screaming for an ambulance on the jetty..... poor guy took a digger on the jetty........ took the first aid kit and shuffled over..... after making some headway in between the "hysterical helpers".... got the poor guy bandaged up and determined he was prob just fine except for the cuts.... was able to slink away and retreat as the lights and sirens showed up....
hope he heals quick Bob

Sometimes there's just an inch or a second between a hurt thumb or a cracked head. That is gruesome looking. Hopefully it will heal fast

I'm glad dad is ok! Thanks God!
We need to be careful on any rocks. I know some at Watch Hill that are super slippery even with Korkers. I did the old "step into a hole", thing a few years back.
