Be prepared when going down the cape to fish the backside beaches for the Skeeters. They will suck you dry. The beach is also loaded with sand fleas and No-Seeums. Add the 3 of them togther out on the beach when the wind lays down like the past few nights and even catching fish won't help forget them. I can't remember having to use bug spray before last night on the beach. They are nasty, so don't forget the spray. Just be careful not to spray it on your line, goretex jacket, or breathable waders because it will eat the water proofing away.
On an other note, what are you supposed to do with the new Off lotion that everyone is raving about. I wouldn't want to get any on my lures, bait or line, but how are you supposed to avoid this when you have to spread it on and now have bug spray on yor hands. ?

Good point Red,

I have been using the Off stuff and washing my hands off before touching anything. The fish haven't seemed to mind but if I get sloppy it would not be good

I have a few tricks as of late to shed ANY scent of man or synthetics.

It greatly enhances results

Reccomended by a former pest control guy who fishes now. According to him, it's the CO2 emissions from animals that the bugs are attracted to. I haven't bought one yet, but it does seem like an option to all the messy lotions, creams, sprays etc...

I was jigging the Ditch last Saturday nite and they were brutal.I tried the Off botanical but not on my hands. Well I shine my neck lite down on my reel to check line lay ( I fish conventional) and saw 6 skeeters on one hand at the same time. I like Steve's suggestion about the latex gloves, gonna try that next trip.

Ya know, I thought about what I'd look like with the bugshirt and waders. I even tried to crop the shirt and put it on a picture of me with waders. Funny as it looks, I think I'm looking into the shirt more and more. LOL - I guess as long as the fish don't care.

bugs eating you so fiercely it was like being devoured instead of being buzzed. i was praying for my neoprene gloves that i left at home with 75 mosquitos attacking each bare hand. Havent seen that kinda bug infestation for many moons. I have a mini pond and have drained it three times so far due to mosquito control.
um...skin so soft is a good substitute.... and the citranella oiled sprays are good too substituting for the deet based sprays....but these bugs need either a stiff wind or huge smokey torches to drive them off. I'ts hard to concentrate on fishing getting bit that often and definately takes the FUN right out of it. NASTY!!

AVS: I make them of course....just a hobby of mine.... i like art. My mother was an exceptional painter...i inherited some talent i suppose.
bugs.... are to be avoided what with west nile virus being spread via mosquitos....and its only a matter of time before other even nastier diseases will be added to that list. I havent seen a single mosquito spraying truck anywhere? Have you?

Good morning. I am on my 2nd cup o java. Fished 'til 3:00am.

That photo is me windsurfing in Madaket in about 30-40kts of wind with a 10-15 ft swell. I had just jumped off the wave starting on the left and now am on the way down. I landed and sailed away. It was a fun day indeed. The next three days after, the fishing was epic !

Maybe I should get that one out of there. I threw it up while we were talking about waves and rip currents, etc.

Nuf said ?

#4 Marigolds: Plant marigolds around the yard, the flowers give off a smell that bugs do not like, so plant some in that garden also to help ward off bugs without using insecticides. Try wearing a few, as well.

#5 Skin-So-Soft: "Tough guy" Marines who spend a great deal of time "camping out" say that the very best mosquito repellant you can use is Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about half and half with alcohol.

#6 Pure Vanilla: One of the best natural insect repellants that I've discovered is made from the clear real vanilla. This is the pure vanilla that is sold in Mexico. It works great for mosquitoes and ticks, don't know about other insects.

Bananas ? You like bananas? So do mosquitos, they love bananas. If you eat bananas, the mosquitos will love you, - something about the banana oil as your body processes it. Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquito's will be much less interested.

I arrived at Race Point at 3am Monday and attempted to start fishing, they were thick as pea soup!! I had my wife and 4 kids in the truck, and you could not even open the door for 2 seconds, w/out letting 1 zillion bloodsuckers in to feed on the sleeping urchins. We tried Hatches Harbor, same thing!! When the sun came up they all went to bed,Thank God> My oldest son and I finally ventured outside. He caught his first bluefish, but no stripers to be found.
Oh well, to a seven year old, a fish is a fish!
