novice seeks advice

I'm new to the area (live in Scituate), have a boat, and have been striper fishing the last few months.

I've read so many different methods of striper fishing, that I've become completely confused.

I started the season casting plugs (rapalas, rebels, etc) against rocks, structure, etc and had moderate success w/ schoolies.

Recently the local bait store turned me on to trolling a tube and seaworm, and I have happily caught my first keeper last week and several blues.

Last summer I went w/ friend and fly casted to pods of boiling fish on the surface (we tracked feeding birds). Is this a late season event only?

Do methods change over the course of the season?

I would appreciate advice on any other successful boat methods and places to try around my area.

Thanks in advance.

Question

Methods of fishing can change during the season due mostly to the changeover of bait in the water due to migration. Casting to boiling fish is a season long event, providing you are fortunate to come upon such an event. I fish from shore so blitzes are a little more difficult to come by than by boat. Plugging always works. When I first started fishing, I read everything I could get my hands onMake sure you subscribe to On The Water magazine. You will learn much from this publication. Pay attention to many of the people on this site as they are also great sources for information and are often sharing with others. Most importantly, you must ingest the knowledge, and take from it what is most helpful to you in your particular style of fishing, whether it be flyfishing, plugging, bait fishing, etc. Join a fishing club such as the Mass Striped Bass Association, check the website at www.MSBA.net. These meetings are informative and often have great speakers that you can learn from. Also try to get to know and go fishing with other people and learn from those who have been doing this for awhile. You will find most fisherman are willing to lend you a hand and get you on your way. Bait and Tackle shop owners are also there to help, so keep fishing, keep asking questions and I wish you great luck and tight lines.

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

North of you on the Cohasset line is an area called the Glades. Troll your tube n worm as close to the rocks as you dare go and then a smidge closer. Same stuff works further up off Gunrock beach and blacks beach, but the glades is better. The fish will be in shallower water and tighter to the rocks than you will believe, but they will be there.
