Angry Newport Parking Fee to go up

Ok now I am POed. I just read this it Tues paper. " first reading of an ordinance to change imposing fee increases for fishing vehicle parking pass from $10 to $30 for residents and $60 for nonresidents. Residents must own property or have their vehicles registered in Newport. The second reading would be at the Aug27 meeting. The fee increases would raise additional revenue for the city totaling $9,030 a year"

You can bet that if this gets passed they will be ticketing and towing. To all you Newport residents PLEASE go an fight this. I live in portsmouth and they will not hear what I have to say.

Geez - I hope they at least spend a buck on a halfway decent sticker. Anything worth $60 in plain sight will be open invitation to a smashed window. I already had my first pass stolen from out of my truck at Brenton - I had forgotten to hide it.

Be happy you can still park. Many residents would be happy to close off access to anglers. Not many people like us and the vast majority do not understand that it's 15% of the people screwing things up, many not even anglers...

Very true John R The major problem is the lack of parking in Newport to begin with and then the bull you get from the people who live around some spots. They seem to feel that if they have a house on the water that it is all private property and have no prob telling you so or calling the cops and telling them you are out there doing such and such to get you kicked out. I still am amazed that I can get to a spot at 11pm fish all night to be kicked out at 7am for making to mush noise AKA I woke up and this guy was on the rocks behind my house and I dont like that so Ill call and say he woke me up. when are the powers to be going to realize that all the things they do drive people away from this town and that their $$$ go with them!

I really, really wish that they would just enforce the existing regulations before they talk about raising fees or eliminating access. Has anybody here seen any enforcement or parking tickets this year? I haven't and my experiences this year are that only a small pecentage of the cars even have a pass. If the residents are complaining about trash and noise, then just start handing out tickets to the violaters, and the problem will go away. Even a $30/60 fee will be meaningless without enforcement.

Maybe DZ knows more as he goes to the meetings. Hey Dennis you out there?

Angry Newport Pkg. Fees etc.

Rhode Island is FAST becoming Conn. Where a FLOOD of out of staters buy the property and RESIDENTS of the state have to take on the hassle and expense of a boat to access THEIR OWN COASTLINE.
But hey, this is the U.S. where state and municipal gov't.s are putting in their budgets to force their medical plans to purchase prescription drugs from Canada.
We don't make anything here anymore and now...and now...

There was some question aked of all of the Newport fishing club members in regards to trying to solve the trash issue. One of the topics was rasing the rates to deter the families that decide to camp out and leave everything including the kitchen sink behind.

60 bucks to me is nothing to park, and I think it's a damn good idea. In addtition, "residents" were to be defined as Aquidneck Island residents, maybe that has changed. Either way I think it's a good thing if it deters the "families"

KLMulder, I'm curious where this incident of yours occured. I fish Newport 3 - 4 days a week, never having an issue. No need to disclose spots in public a PM will be fine.

I would completly agree but as the saying goes a fence only keeps out an honest man. I will get one ether way but if they dont go after the people causing the prob the prob will not go away. It is just like the state pier in NPT they have had probs down there for years so now it is off limits, well I was down there every night for a mounth before anyone came in to tell us we could not be there. If they would start arresting people causing the probs the rest of us would have access to more spots and land owners would not feel they had to try to close space off to the public. Now I understand they dont have the man power to watch every where why is that? it is because the leaders of the local and state gov see fit to take the money raised from fishing and spend it in other areas. So POed I nedd to stop for awile.
