GoPro Hero 3?

Does any one have a GoPro Hero 3?

It looks like it does video under low light conditions.

I am thinking of asking Santa Clause for one. ;-).

If you are not set on the Hero 3, you can now get the Hero 2 for $199 (Amazon)! Originally $299.

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.

"Hey, lets come out with a new version instead of making things we promised a year ago work!"

Glad Wifi is still effed up!

Even though I'm a pretty avid iPhone user and will be for the foreseeable future, the above sentiment quite completely sums up Apples production funnel and philosophy when releasing "new" products.

I have been a GoPro user since the HD Hero I (just known as the HD Hero) and this latest revision is by far the best looking yet. The 120 fps at 720p really makes it a viable option for action sports like skiing and biking (those are as close to "action" as I get) and the slimmed down profile and integrated features finally make the need for "premium" accessories go the wayside... The added fact that it comes with the underwater housing stock makes this a much better value than the Hero 2 even at its now discounted price.

If you are considering buying a camera like this, price out the options you want and make sure that, despite the higher initial sticker price, you evaluate the entire black edition package. The accessories and spec enhancements it has over the other lines (and the previous generations of the camera) make it the best value for someone who wants to get the most out of this gadget. Take it from a guy who has owned EVERY accessory made for the camera... it adds up quick.

I will be picking one of these up when the hype dies down a bit and I can find the proper distribution channels. Liking the low light enhancement for fishing! If anyone gets ahold of one of these in the near-term, post some videos in various test scenarios... it'll help some of us make more informed decisions (I promise to do the same.)

On the "sports" point, Teton Gravity Research has been using them (Along with its very big brother the Vio POV.1/POV.HD) for a long time now.

I know they have been used, and to much acclaim, but for the weekend warrior type user who doesn't have a lot of time to screw around with post-production or funding to buy stitching software/etc. the video quality has been tough. These new features with increased framerates and resolution means that the raw video requires less post-prod work to make it look spectacular. Marry that with the slimmer profile and you have a much better all around tool for capturing whatever it is you do...

Actually for the money, I think the basic camera is a value...but you are right all the add-ons is where they make their money.
As for wi-fi...I suppose that would be nice but to transmitt HD wirelessly to a ipad or droid is to me, well you have to expect some latency for a $199 device.

I would expect this to follow the apple model.

A) develop a cool devise
B) create a "cult" user group
C) upgrade the units and abandon the old device as obsolete every 12-18 months.
D) the cult virtue of the user will drive them to keep buying the new unit.

The apple device bandwagon is so over hyped...but every one clamors for the next thing and can't wait to show it off.

Higher frame rate and higher resolution does not mean less post production. In fact in a lot of cases, it increases it, along with being forced to be less sloppy with footage and framing.

"sins" in the filming are harder to negate.

Have you made your own DIY steadycam for it yet?

Scratch59, thanks for the detailed feedback. I am leaning towards the black edition. The low light feature is key for me.
