Bluefin tuna sells for record $1.76 million in Japan; sushi anyone?

By: David Strege

Just off the press.. How about that one freak??

Japan was abuzz after a prized bluefin tuna weighing 489 pounds was sold for a record $1.76 million at the first auction of the year at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market on Saturday. Kiyoshi Kimura, who is president of Kiyomura Co. and the Sushi-Zanmai sushi restaurant chain, bought the massive fish at $3,600 per pound.

Let's repeat that, shall we? That's $1.7 million--or roughly the price of a mansion in most states--for a fish. That's one expensive hunk of sushi. Watch as Kimura escorts the fish to his restaurant amid a horde of media before cutting it up and serving the sushi-starved patrons:

For $3,600 bucks a pound I can get a lot more mileage out of The Capital grille and a really primo call girl with a limo.

May fortune favor the foolish....

You know, I never get into politics here but this is just F&%$#ING stupid. There are people in NY and NJ that are having a hard time making ends meet because of Sandy and these nitwits are paying $3600 a pound to eat raw fish. I am at a total loss to understand the logic here.

No boat, back in the suds.

This is an annual game that is played in Tokyo by some sushi restaurant owners as free PR. Yes a very expensive game but basically a business decision by a restaurant owner to get his place on the front page of the newspapers...

It is purely a publicity stunt. Every year there is a new record price. Compared to $4 million for a 30 second superbowl add, it is a bargain.

No, no, no. we’re 30… 30, three zero.

It is a cultural thing for them
Thete is "great honor" and prestige to have the first fish of the new year. I read or saw something in years past. I think it is a religious thing also.

After seeing that article, I wonder how many commercial permits will be purchased this year?

Some people from ABTA (American Blue fin tuna Assn) told me this is not just a game it is a vertically integrated buy. The boat/seller is usually part of the same parent company that owns the restaurant that buys the first fish.

Based on that article - it would be easy to jack the commercial permit prices up to $5000.00. What do they cost now?
