To take it a bit further I think lure cross section may also be a factor. I've had trouble hooking fish using a large danny that I converted to fixed hangers. I think the wide body of the plug twists the hook point up and away from the fish as the fish hits the plug and pushes the shank up against the belly of the plug. Likewise I had issues with the hook overlooping the body and hanging up on thin needles with fixed hangers. I think they work great on thin profile plugs like plastic swimmers and magic swimmers.
