Probably depends upon the level upon which each of us participates. Some folks grab a 12-pack, some fritos, frozen mackerel and their favorite lawn chair... I wouldn't call that much of a sport. If it is, then pie eating contests should be considered a sport.
Some wear wetsuits, grab their rod with their teeth and swim out into the surf... or walk 6 miles on soft sand in nasty conditions in the middle of the night... or brave the weather and seas out on their boat.
Hunters and fishermen are called "sportsman." And I fish for "sport" not for meat. If you fish tournaments, you compete, sometimes on a team. Casting (well) takes timing and coordination similar to hitting a baseball or a golf ball.
I think fishing is an activity and a hobby that you can participate in at an infinite number of levels and at some of those levels, I would consider it a sport.
When I have that argument with someone, they invariably have little to no experience with fishing and almost always like golf. If they call golf a sport, fishing (at least my brand of fishing) is definitely a sport.
