I think we could have a couple weeks to go yet but it might happen a little sooner this year. It was not as cold as last year and the water is starting to warm up now.

As far as avoiding crowds in the "spots" try this... Head on down without your rod and watch the yahoo's for a half hour or so every other night. When it gets hot and the squid really show up in numbers to spawn...head back down there at 2:00am and most of the yahoos will be gone. (Head there at 8:00pm on a Sat night and you have a mob problem.)

You only need to hit it hard for 2 or 3 week nights and you have enough to last you the season easy. Take a friend to help jig. (take my word for this...it is WELL WORTH a few late nights to get a nice load of squid for the season...this is the prime LOCAL stuff, 1000X better then the box of cleaned and washed calif calamai you pick up in the bait shop or grocery store. (Although, some shops pick up a load directly from the squid boats and package it themselves and this is pretty good but it is pretty pricey.)

Vacume pack and freeze these whole (with ink and slime in there) and they last all season!
