I've been using a pair of Rapala pliers for years....never had an issue, I just hit them a couple of times a season w/ some master mechanic and they work fine.

That being said I lost mine last week as I left them on the bumper of the truck when I drove off....I'll get a new pair of the same.

in the 8.5" version are a good tool for unhooking fish.....better I think for that task than the VS's. Pretty cheap. They supposedly make a version with carbide cutters as well. Pop the plastic spring out.

Not to take anything away from the VS's. They're a nice tool and nice tools pay themselves back over your lifetime....if you don't mind the hassle of a lanyard.
