Here's the real story: Back in the early 1980s I had the pleasure of guiding a famous sports figure to some striped bass on the island. He told me he wanted to catch some of those "pin striped" fish. I told him I couldn't guarantee him "pin striped" but could get him some "seven striped" fish. Well, the wind was hawking from the southwest making most of the island unfishable so we ended up casting at Grove Point. We waded a short way onto the bar and I told him to cast his needle into the cove toward North Light blinking in the distance. A short while later he hooks up and struggles with this huge bass, he gets it to the surfs edge and I land it for him. It's a real brute, over 50 easily - I lift it out of the water so he could see it and he yells out "HOLY COW". I shake Phil's hand and congratulate him. He mentions something like "now they're gonna call this place "Holy Cow Cove". "No Phil", I say, from now on it we'll just call it Cow Cove. And that is how Cow Cove got its name
