beach fishing - bait rods

Any suggestions? The only fishing I have been doing lately is chunking off the beach with my 5 year old. Sitting in beach chairs eating snacks looking at lures and chasing seagulls. Its fun I love that he really likes it and we have a good couple hours every time even when we don't catch there is always can be ice-cream on the way home. I can see myself doing more of this in the future and wondering what the "right gear" is for this kind of thing. Mono? Soft rod, maybe an old glass one? I noticed that my current setups were fast and lobbing bait was not their strongpoint. In case anyone wanted to know the score so far Dad tossing plugs zero - Drew with Pogie or mack chunks 2 blues and 2 dogfish....
