Raynham business owner seeks to open taxi service

By Sharon Holliday, Enterprise correspondent

RAYNHAM — Selectmen are reviewing a proposal from a resident and business owner for taxi service within town.

The service was proposed by resident Mrmacey

noted the town has increased in population over the last five years, in part because of the Old Colony commuter rail system.

"There is currently no public transportation offered in the town," wrote Quish, owner and operator of MsM Executive Transportation Service

"I believe that I would be doing the town of Raynham a great service by providing public transportation at a reasonable cost.

"It is therefore my desire to apply for a license to operate a taxi service for the town of Raynham," he concluded.

Raynham, with a population of 11,730, has no intra-town public transportation for residents other than bus service to Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park as part of out-of-town bus service to Boston via routes 138 and 24.

Other out-of-town services include commuter bus service to Boston from a parking area on Route 104 and MBTA commuter rail service from Bridgewater north to Boston's South Station and south to Middleboro and Lakeville.

Selectmen said the request to apply for a license would first have to be reviewed by the town's zoning officer and the chief of police. They also requested Town Administrator Randall Buckner check the location of the proposed business.

Commenting on the proposal after the meeting, Selectman Gordon Luciano said he felt the proposal for taxi service within the town "could be very successful as long as certain conditions are in place that can be met."

"We want to make sure that it's not based out of a residence. We all of a sudden don't want to see four cabs parked in a driveway," Luciano said.

"This is something new and there's a niche for it. But we'd have to know where it's based, set up regulations, establish a license fee and create criteria for granting a license. We have to protect the town and the clients they serve," he said.

here we go growing on a daily basis.
