What's up on South Shore?
Just back from a long weekend and an attitude adjustment in the middle of nowhere, approximately 1-1/2 hours northeast of Bangor. Weather was actually too good, the summer too hot up there with too little rain and the water temp was still almost 70, which meant our typical early fall patterns hadn't even materialized. Even so, my brother in law and I put about 45 smallies over 3 lbs over the side, with maybe 4 solid 4-1/2#'s. Saw lots of ospreys, eagles, my favorite loons and a great early morning encounter with a feeding moose while fishing the last day. I was able to get pretty close with the trolling motor before she spooked, but got a great shot with the digital.
It was good to get away and concentrate on fishing for a few days. The clear cloudless skies made for some absolutely stunning night skies. You really don't appreciate the night sky, until you get away from all the city lights. Even saw what John described as a common occurance in northern Maine, a light moving like nothing I'd ever see before, which was a little unsettling sitting out in the middle of nowhere. I don't know what it was, but it made me feel a bit small perched on the back of my boat, miles from anyone or anything.
So, I hear you guys actually caught fish at the Mass Leg, great news...wish I could have been there. What's going on with the stripers locally? When I left the bite had slowed to a crawl, when the reverse should have been happening. Has there been any infux of new fish, bait, blues or anything to get excited about?
